1 killed, 3 hurt in fiery Seven Mile Bridge crash
Wreck shuts down Seven Mile Bridge for hours

One person was killed and three others injured — one critically — in a fiery three-car crash on the Seven Mile Bridge that shut down U.S. 1 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

The 4 p.m. wreck involved a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sport utility vehicle that caught fire and an FWC boat it was trailering, which fell off onto the road, reports say.

One of two people in the SUV, believed to be a biologist, died at Fishermen's Hospital, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin.

Another victim — it was unclear at press time if it was the other occupant of the SUV  — was in critical condition at Lower Keys Medical Center, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Alex Annunziato.

Another accident victim was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami with a broken femur and was in stable condition as of press time, reports say.

The fourth victim was at Fishermen's Hospital, but his or her identity and condition were unknown.

Rescue workers had removed one of the FWC officers from the burning truck. It was unclear at press time whether that was the biologist who died.

Who and what caused the crash remained under investigation Thursday night. A trooper supervisor investigated the wreck and a crash reconstruction team was still on the scene as of 6 p.m., Annunziato said.

The Seven Mile Bridge was reopened at 8:30 p.m., Herrin said.

FHP had not released the names and residency of those injured, the types of vehicles involved, or who was in which vehicle.

Rescue workers doused the flames with foam, and about 40 gallons of gasoline spilled into the Atlantic Ocean, according to the Sheriff's Office.

7 mile bridge accident

All of Ruth Ann Dearybury's friends in Venice, Fl are distressed by this accident that injured Ruth Ann and killed her Aunt Jean. Ruth Ann is a loved and valuable member of our community and we wish her a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with you Ruth Ann and all of your family members.

I am very Sorry

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident.

My comment is in regards to

My comment is in regards to the picture of the accident. In the aerial photograph a large twin outboard boat is shown. The FWC vehicle, a Ford Expedition, is too small to be towing this boat. This boat should have been towed by a one ton truck and not a SUV. I wonder if this was a contributing factor in this tragic accident. Another person that posted a comment said that she had observed the driver pulled over on the side of the road checking the trailer. It's something to think about the next time you are going to tow a trailer or boat.

trailer wobbled and went into opposite lane

is the official report. I agree, a larger vehicle should have been used to tow. Or perhaps there was an existing problem with the trailer; either way , this is tragic. Jessica , please accept my sincere condolences.

jess

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to you Jess. sandy steele (steph's mom)

Tragic Loss

My wife and I only met Jeff one time thru our son, who was a friend of Jeff and his wife, however, in that short meeting it was clear Jeff was a wonderful caring individual that loved his family and his work. We can't possibly imagine the loss his wife and family are feeling at this time but can only let them know they are in our thoughts and prayers. This is a tragic loss and one that will impact many lives for years to come. We sincerely hope that people will learn from tbis horrible accident and think before they take chances with their lives and the lives of others. To Jessica, our deepest sympathies.

Elderly lady...

Why didn't the County fly out the elderly lady hurt in the crash? I heard she was taken to Key West's hospital an hour away where she languished until the hospital's in Miami accepted her. What the heck is up with that? She's the one who died.

Just so you know...

The Elderly lady was not the one who passed away. It was one of the FWC biologists, a good friend, and good person.

Wow, thanks for the bunk and

Wow, thanks for the bunk and useless information. Sounds like an elderly lady died because two people didn't know how to trailer a boat.

You are mistaken

The elderly lady did die, just later than the FWC bioligist. And YES, she should have been life flighted right away and not taken to Key West first, morons

Finally someone is watching...

The paramedics responsible for sending that lady south to Key West should be reprimanded or fired. That woman should have been flown from the scene. Their incompetent medical director should be thrown in jail.

speed

People speed on that bridge just to go fast. It's one of the few places on the O.S.H. that the cops seem to have trouble patroling. The only way to stop it is to cover the bridge with cameras.

Simplier trick

Cameras can be mounted on the start and ending of the bridge and time comparisons done to determine if a vehicle was speeding or not across the bridge. Cops could be waiting in hiding right after the bridge exits to pull speeders over. Signs at each end of the bridge stating the maximum time it should take to safely cross the bridge will not only keep the speeders down, but the dangerous passing too. People won't dare take more time than the sign says if they know it will occur a ticket and a delay in their travels.

Trauma Star

Contrary to what the small-towners say, the Trauma-Star is worth every penny. Some people have been in the Keys too long and don't realize that helicopters are pretty standard in the real world. My condolences to the victim's families.

Heart Breaking

You are right; it was probably some moron in a hurry behind the boat and did not want to drive the 55 or 60 wanted to do 80 plus on the bridge and I would not be surprised it they might of caused the accident. My heart and prayers go out to the FWC family.

Read the keynoter...

For the people so sure this was caused by a speeding vehicle, go to keysnet.com. There you will find more information in regards to the accident. The FHP is still investigating but they released a statement about the FWC vehicle losing control and Overstreet slammed on the brakes and that spun the vehicle counterclockwise cause Overstreet to hit the other ford then the boat launched and hit the Saturn. Why the vehicle began "fishtailing" is unclear or if the fire started in the FWC vehicle was prior to the accident or caused by it. From all the people saying they watched the both FWC biologist get out and inspect the boat and trailer before this all happened leads one to guess that something wasn't right but couldn't find the problem. And it does not look like an expedition they were driving, it looks way smaller, like one of those Escapes. There were no indications, yet, pointing towards an aggressive driver causing this. Just a vehicle losing control. Did the other woman really die? It didn't say that in the keynoter. Just that she was at lower keysand her condition was not released. Either way, my heart goes out to all involved. Even though speeding and carelessness has not been indicated, this very tragic accident should be a lesson to all who travel anywhere. You may be in control over your situation, but you can't control or predict what is going on around you.

I Am Sorry For The Dead And The Victims

You know, I am very sorry for the dead and the victims but I want to bet that this accident was caused by people in a hurry trying to pass on the bridge. I don't know how many times I have seen near fatal collisions or I have almost been involved in them because people are in such a hurry that they need to pass. I usually drive 70 MPH on the bridge if possible, but there is always a bone head behind me that wants to do 80 to a 100 and passes me creating danger in that bridge. I hope that this accident will serve as an example of what could happen if you are in a hurry and pass someone on the bridge. I want to arrive alive, what about YOU????

To the commenter here who says...

... that he/she usually goes 70 mph on this bridge: SLOW THE HELL DOWN!!! Going that fast because you think others behind you want to go faster is dangerous. And I doubt there is ALWAYS someone passing you at 80-100 mph.

This accident was caused by

This accident was caused by an under the speed limit driver, who was inhibiting the flow of traffic.

Accident on the bridge

So sorry for the families involved. Isn't the speed limit 55?

I doubt it

A dear sweet lady who was like a Mom to my 10 brothers and sisters and I died in this crash. You might want to rethink what you say before putting it in words.

sorry for the dead and the victims

i was amazed at this person who ADMITTED in print that, although they call other drivers "boneheads" for driving fast on the bridge, they actually drive 70 mph themselves! doesn't that mean that you are one of those "boneheads" that you are putting down? i am a retired trucker, and the first lesson i was taught when i started was, dont worry about what is going on behind you, worry about what is in front of you. if those "boneheads" want to speed, let them. you have no reason to speed yourself!!! didn't your mom tell you: if so-and-so wants to jump off a bridge, that doesn't mean you have to follow! wise up reader. until you slow down, why should anyone else? BONEHEAD!

Gee sounds like you ARE one

Gee sounds like you ARE one of the boneheads that need to do 70 in a 55!!!

70 MPH? Your part of the problem!

The speed limit on the bridge is 55 MPH, the accident could have been caused by someone speeding from the opposite direction while one vehicle was trying to pass the FWC w/trailer. Ever think of that? You see someone on your tail trying to get you to speed on US 1, you slow down a bit until they back off. If they pass, you take their license plate, make, model and color of car and watch them if they act recklessly with the vehicles ahead. If they do, you make note of the mile marker and location and call the cops with the information and they will get them further up the road. The penalty for accidents on US 1 is almost 5 hours of wait time, death and disability, it's not worth it. The locals have a high responsibility to keep themselves and the impatient tourists in line as they live and work in the Keys and can't afford these huge delays in their travels. Save the need for speed for the Florida Turnpike, it's speed limit is 65 and there are at least two lanes, so passing is much safer.

Or

Someone doing 45mph. If you're on a highway you should do close to 10 over just like the police. Its the difference in speed that causes problems. People who are going slow contribute just like the people who want to pass. DOT should re-think the speed limit on that bridge. But as far as I know the cause of this tragady is yet to be determined.

Two Problems

70 is definitely part of the problem, but so are the people doing 40 who create the road rage and dangerous passing. The speeders need to slow down and the slow pokes need to speed up.

The FWC truck pulling the

The FWC truck pulling the boat had some kind of trouble as the trailer started swerving. Read the Keynoter story as to what happened.

He was in front of me and he pulled over on the side of the road, and it looked like he was getting out to check the boat. The boat had twin engines on it, if it is the same one.
