Plans for schools, city debated
Public talks about Glynn Archer, Horace O'Bryant and office complex

People came out Wednesday night to tell the School Board what they thought about a plan to build a new elementary school on the campus of the middle school, which would be rebuilt.

Under the plan, the district would borrow $36 million in low-interest stimulus funds in the next few months and break ground this summer on a new elementary school and a rebuilt Horace O'Bryant Mi...

I just want to know what

I just want to know what kind of genius would sell off all of the property to the city and them rent a portion of it back from them? Sure it's a short-term cash flow solution, but in the long run the schools lose. Why not keep all of the property and sell the buildings to the city that they would need and rent them the property under the buildings and parking area? They have already said they would not need the cafeteria for the city (although I am sure the employees would love to keep it!).

Buildings Do Not Educate Children...

Buildings do not educate children. We keep building attractive and expensive schools, however, what's happening inside is not very pretty. Our children rank last and near the bottom in every measurable academic area, as it relates to their counterparts in the rest of the world. All of our High Schools, even that pretty one, Coral Shores High School have been reduced a full letter grade in their academic rankings by the State of Florida. Key West High School is only rated as a "C" School by a state that ranks 42nd in Reading.

Louie Louie

Since when did he become an expert on education? I hope he took the complimentary shuttle service to the meeting.

Schools / City

I watched the schools/ city's meeting last night and would like to see Glenn Archer close, built a new K-6 on the HOB campus along with a new middle school 6-8. What did surprise me was the appearance of Louie Latorre, was he parole so he could attend, oh, that's right, he hasn't served a day of his sentence for the DUI conviction after nearly killing a lady while driving the wrong way on A1A. Wasn't he a campaign worker for former Supt Randy Acevedo, didn't he drive for Morgan McPhearson and was he the financial advisor to the convicted parking meter crook and now charged with IRS tax fraud, Gilbert Suarez, and he now wants to run the school district and the city of Key West. I am surprise Scholl and Cates didn't trip him as he walked to the podium, what a loser.

Keep Glynn R. Archer School

We need to keep GRA right where it is; and we need to use some of the stimulis funds to do needed repairs. Use the lions share of the loan to rebuild H.O.B Middle school like we are suppose to do. Don't let the city take our GRA school it will change the entire dynamics of that neighborhood. We'll have to redistrict the area which may allow the types of businesses that we do not want on White street. We will have all the additional traffic from the city's business comming on and off of United street along with the Montissori school kids being dropped off and picked up. H.O.B Middle school's small campus cannot handle all the additional students from GRA to create a K-8 school. There is not enough room there to support a good educational environment. It will turn that neighborhood on it's ear as well with the extra busses and traffic going all morning long. All the kids from Bahama Village that walk or ride a bike will have to deal with the new congestion of United street from the city. We need to keep the "Tiger" at GRA, the "BUCCANEER" at H.O.B and the "PIRATES" at 525 Angela street.

$38,000,000.00

The money agreement STIPULATES it is to be used to do exactly what they are working towards at HOB. We don't do this-say adios to the $$. Sugarloaf school is a prime example of how this can work. Great school- kids feel less stress about "moving up to middle" school, but there's still the thrill of being "big kid'. Parents need no run all over the city getting their kids from different places. it's all in the timing- it is the best idea.

The K-8 model is more

The K-8 model is more successful. That's a fact. Moving to that model for all our kids, instead of just the lucky ones who can get a ride up to Sugarloaf, was supposed to happen a few years back. But too many Bubbas threw fits with their version of, "Leave it the way it is. I went to HOB and I'm fine." Newsflash: You're not fine.

What type of businesses do

What type of businesses do you not want on White Street? Who are you to say what businesses can open? I do not want trashy bars or strip clubs on Duval where my family has lived for about 70 years, but they are there. Sounds like you also do not want the Bahama Village children in your neighborhood. I wonder why...

Keep Glynn R. Archer School

I wish we had more kids in old town and Bahama Village and we need to keep GRA on White street. If we lose GRA and the zoning we may see those types of businesses on White Street that are better off on Duval street.I want to keep it a residential neighborhood that people want to move into because there is a school and not a bar.
