The Coast Guard rescued an 80-year-old New York man from a sinking boat Sunday after the anchored vessel took a wave over the bow.
Tony Jaroszewski of Alden, N.Y., was about six miles south of Long Key in a 19-foot SportCraft when the boat took on water, according to the Coast Guard. Rescuers said Jaroszewski put on a life jacket, and was uninjured when a rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Islamorada arrived on the scene at about 2 p.m.
Jaroszewski was the only person on the boat.
A helicopter crew from the Marathon Coast Guard station also responded to Jaroszewski's call for help, as did a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission vessel.
Jaroszewski told rescuers the boat, which was listing when the rescue crew arrived, had nearly capsized when it took the wave.
Jaroszewski reportedly arranged to have a salvage company recover the vessel.
Coast Guard crews also were busy earlier Sunday morning when a 28-foot boat caught fire in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon.
Callers reported the boat was engulfed in flames at 1:30 a.m., and Coast Guard crews arrived to find 60-year-old Thomas Sporborg being treated by Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies and paramedics, reports say.
Sporborg was taken to Fishermen's Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. There apparently were no other people aboard the vessel.
The fire was extinguished by 4:30 a.m. The boat was still afloat and at anchor, despite the fire, reports say.
The cause of that fire remains under investigation.
