Police threw a flash-bang grenade through the window of a Meadows apartment Thursday evening as a diversionary tactic to arrest two alleged drug dealers, according to Lt. David Black.
Both suspects are from Miami-Dade County.
Jean Wisler, 25, was charged with possession of crack cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, as well as failure to appear in court stemming from another recent drug arrest.
Jabaris Williams, 22, was charged with possession of crack cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Key West police special operations detectives, federal Drug Enforcement Agency and U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement officers threw the grenade as a diversion about 6:30 p.m. while they forced open the front door of Apt. 1 at 716 Eisenhower Drive, Black said.
The raid at the corner of Eisenhower and Newton Street was sparked by neighbors' complaints of drug traffic in the area, reports say.
Officers found 11.8 grams of crack cocaine and 2.7 grams of pot in the apartment, said police spokeswoman Alyson Crean.
In case the suspects were armed, police closed nearby streets as heavily armed tactical officers made the arrests, though no guns were found, Black said. He added that police had information that a woman known to both men carried guns in her purse so they wouldn't be found in a search.
"We appreciate the community support in our efforts to make the neighborhood safer," Black said. "Nobody was hurt. There was good cooperation with the other agencies and the neighbors."
