EPA standards causing anxiety
Keys officials fear water-quality rules will go too far

Water-quality standards in the works at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have Florida Keys officials worrying about the cost of implementing them.

"As they're written right now, the implications are quite dire," said County Administrator Roman Gastesi, who plans to put a resolution before the Monroe County Commission next month that would officially express the count...

Too bad we have no representation in Congress

Our Representative, Ileana Ros-Leitenen, has been in Congress for years but still doesn't understand that for matters like this she is supposed to fight to get back the Federal Income Tax dollars that come out of the Keys to come back and pay for these Federal mandates. Her sole purpose in life is to "protect" us from an invasion from Cuba and getting her picture in the paper.

And to think, I would expect that those serving the public, such as the Administrator and FKAA's Reynolds would favor protecting these fragile islands. We have nearly destroyed this lovely place and should be ashamed. I say impose the most rigerous standards possible and let the golfers, along with Gastesi and Reynolds, go somewhere else. How is it anyone can trust Reynolds anyway, what with how his anti bid, ultra costly sewer program is the disgrace of wasterwater people all over America and has fleeced Florida taxpayers for years. These guys should be 'scared', perhaps the time is coming to bring some intelligent thinking to protecting mother nature. Worried about a golf course? Please. What an idiot.

Leave it to the Obama-haters to come out of the woodwork on this, when Gastesi is only expressing fear about what he says MAY be regulations that just MAYBE could POSSIBLY come about in the future. Is Gastesi showing his true colors by playing to the grandstand of Obama-haters? Heck, who needs rules about clean water, clean air, etc? I thought I liked Gastesi, but maybe I was wrong. More pollution, less rules, that's what we need, eh?

Those who don't want environmental regulations whine that it should be done by legislation. I will gladly trade my medicare and social security in return for all of the FICA and medicare taxes I have paid with 5% interest. With that money I will have a million dollar retirement nest egg, and the best medical insurance. The Constitution includes Amendments 13 and 14. I suggest you read them before commenting. The original Articles of the Constitution, to which you incorrectly refer, were written largely by abolitionists from the North. They counted black people 3/5 for the purpose of limiting representation of slave owning states, in an effort to undermine the political power of those states. They were never considered 3/5 human. I am too intelligent to drink dirty water and eat bad food. Unlike you, with 3/5 intelligence, I do not need government to protect me from myself.

5% interest? What bank are your going to? I do not think either of you are right and that is the problem with this country. The whole idea of moderation and middle ground is gone. It is either one extreme or the other. What actually works well is a middle ground with some government programs and agencies and a lot of personal freedom. I am happy to pay taxes to maintain public infrastructure, an army, some safety net protections. In return, I get a better quality of life overall. Too bad people are so polarized these days to actually work together to better this country.

I am willing to pay for protection of our sovereignty, infrastructure, and help for the truly disabled. If you look at the interest rates the IRS charges on late payments, and pays for overpayment over the last 30 years, it has averaged 10 % or more. Those interest rates during the Carter Administration were 18-20%! I stand corrected. I should claim more like 10%!

My quality of life is superb. My job is secure. My kids cannot afford an education, but I can. I pay premiums for a great medical insurance plan that I chose. I also have a pension. I hate no one. It is working out GREAT. I am able to travel overseas and not be ridiculed for have a commander in chief that is a bozo. We actually have a president who can think. We just passed Health Care reform. The collapse of our banking system was prevented (at least until the right wingers prevents needed regulation). There is a new feeling of hope and happiness in the country that is great.
