Track, tennis teams preparing for district championships

The Key West and Coral Shores High track and field teams will take their first steps toward the state championships on Wednesday in the District 16-2A championship meet at Coral Shores.

In all, seven teams will be competing in the day-long meet, which will begin at 10 a.m. at the school's football stadium.

Leading the way for the Conchs' boys team will be defending 300-meter hurdles state champion Phillip Young and sprinters Michel Sohi, Clive Georges, Cale Hartle and Michael Arencibia. The Conchs' girls will be led by Brittany Wagoner (long jump, high jump), Lindsay Cowpland (shotput) and sprinters Jasmine Jones and Courtnie Coleman.

Among the Coral Shores boys that will be favorites on Wednesday are sprinter and long-jumper Darius Kittle, distance runner Storm Mendez and William Ismer (shotput, discus).

For the Hurricanes' girls, Joanna McCoy will look to successfully defend her district titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs that she achieved last spring. Latrice Johnson (high jump) will also likely contend for the medal stand.

The Marathon High girls tennis team returned from spring break and picked up another win over county rival Key West last week, while the Conch boys won going away.

The Lady 'Fins rolled to a 7-0 win, highlighted by senior Angela Farello's 8-2 victory over Bridget Behmke in No. 2 singles action.

Also for Marathon, top player Marisa Brossard topped Alicia Garcia, 8-0, and Kelsey Wonderlin, Michaelle Rose Bellevue and Marina Kay Wiatt each picked up 8-1 singles wins. In doubles, Wonderlin and Bellevue teamed up to take down Garcia and Behmke, 8-5, and Farello and Wiatt took an 8-3 win over Tori Fitzsimmons and Dora De Maria.

The Dolphins' girls played a friendly doubles match with the boys team on Friday after LaSalle forfeited their scheduled match in Marathon that afternoon due to a lack of players.

Marathon will head up to Continental Park in Miami for the District 16-1A tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday. Key West, led by boys senior No.1 Nick Scammacca, and Coral Shores, led by No. 1 s Zack Stroup and Megan Mullen, will each compete in the District 16-2A tournament on Wednesday at Tropical Park in Miami.

The Key West boys and Coral Shores girls will be looking to advance with second place finishes.
