Final postseason for 2009-10 school year underway

It's the final postseason of the 2009-10 school year and a handful of Keys hardball teams are still in the mix.

On the baseball diamond, three Keys teams are on the road for their respective district tournaments and all will travel to the top seeded teams' home turf for the tournament. Key West visits top-seeded Belen Jesuit for the District 16-4A tournament on Tuesday, when the second-seeded Conchs (14-10) will take on No. 3 seed Mater Academy in the semifinals.

Like Key West, Marathon is also the second seed and will head to top-seeded Westminster Christian for the District 16-2A tournament. The Dolphins (9-11, 3-5) earned that spot by splitting the season series with No. 3 seed Palmer Trinity and by having a better district record.

"This is where we want to be," said Marathon coach Luis Leal. "We wanted to get that 10-win mark, and we were so close, and it would have been nice to have a winning record, but ultimately this is what we wanted. The kids know this is the best chance we've had in a long time."

Marathon will send ace Matt McKeon (6-3, 2 saves) to the mound for the district semifinals, knowing with one win the Dolphins will advance to the state tournament.

"There's no need to save him if you can't get there," said Leal. "He's been key for us this year. I think we'd be down two or three losses without him."

Coral Shores' odds are just like its Keys counterparts as the Hurricanes are off to No. 1 Gulliver Prep for the District 16-3A Championships.

While, the Lady 'Canes are no longer in the hunt after losing in the district tournament, the Lady 'Fins survived their District 16-2A tournament before falling to Westminster Christian in the finals. However, it was good enough for Marathon to advance to the state tournament, as the Dolphins will hit the road to face Florida Christian in the opener.

In Key West, the Lady Conchs will play host to Cardinal Gibbons on Tuesday in the opening round of the state playoffs after earning their second ever District 16-4A Championship this past week. Tuesday's regional opener will be only the sixth game the team has hosted all season.

While the baseball and softball teams are just beginning their postseason runs, the Key West and Coral Shores track and field teams will conclude their seasons at the 2A State Championships on Saturday in Winter Park. Six Conchs and three Hurricanes will be making the trip.

The group from Key West includes Phillip Young, who is looking to repeat as State Champion in the 300-meter hurdles after winning a regional title last week, Clay Wagner, who was fourth in the pole vault at regionals, and the boys regional championship winning 4x400-meter relay team, which consists of Young, Michael Arencibia, Cale Hartle and Clive Georges, who will also be competing in the triple jump and the 400-meter dash, for which he came in third and first, respectively, at the regional meet.

Brittany Wagoner, who came in second in the long jump at regionals, will be the lone representative from the Conchs' girls team.

Making the trip from the Coral Shores girls team are Latrice Johnson, who was fourth in the high jump at last week's regional meet, and Joanna McCoy, who finished third in each of the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. Darius Kittle will be the lone member of the Hurricanes' boys team moving on. He won a regional championship in the long jump.
