The prep track and field season came to a close for the Keys this past Saturday with the Class 2A state championships, but there is still some baseball action left as well as the start of spring football around the county.
Despite coming up just short of any gold medals at the state finals the Keys track and field teams still had a solid season which included four state silver medals, one bronze and one state medal. The six medals added to the list of four regional champions, one regional runner-up, 10 state finalist, 14 District 16-2A champions, 14 district runner-ups, 57 regional qualifiers and a district championship for the Key West boys team is an impressive resume for the Keys track teams this season.
In total, Keys athletes posted 72 top four finishes during the three postseason meets -- 18 first, 19 second, 18 third and 17 fourth -- which turned out to be good for nine athletes, six from Key West and three from Coral Shores, to compete in 10 events at Saturday's 2A State Championship. For the Hurricanes, Joanna McCoy was the lone runner to make the trip in 2009 to the state finals, this year Latrice Johnson and Darius Kittle made the trip. The Conchs had a very similar squad making the trip to the finals with four of the six athletes making it for the second straight year.
The biggest different was last year, Phillip Young was the lone medalist, this year Clive Georges, Brittany Wagoner, McCoy, Johnson and the Conchs 4x400 team (Georges, Young, Cale Hartle and Michael Arencibia) all returned with hardware.

Although the track season is now in the books and the county's three biggest prep baseball teams were eliminated in their respective district tournaments last week, there is still some postseason baseball action in store for the Keys.
Island Christian School advanced to the District 16-1A championship game on Friday to clinch a berth in the state tournament. The Eagles ended up falling, 15-0, to Miami Christian in the district title game, but they will move on to face Brito Miami on Tuesday at 4 p.m., at Florida Memorial University. Brito won the district 15 championship.

While those seasons are winding down, the Keys' football teams will pick back up with spring practices beginning today.
In Key West, the Conchs will open the spring with several new faces both on the field and on the sideline.
One of those new faces will be former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, who will be assisting with the Key West offense this spring.
The Conchs officially opened practice on Saturday with their annual fundraising car wash, which raised about $2,000 for the program. Head coach Jerry Hughes said the car wash, which was held in various spots around town on one of the hottest days of the year, provided a good chance to gauge his players' character, toughness and leadership skills.
The teams are required to work out in shorts for three days, before switching to pads later in the week.
