KEY LARGO -- Ushering in its 10th year, the annual Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge is scheduled Friday through Sunday, Sept. 17-19, in Key Largo.
Target species in the 2010 tournament are trout and redfish -- a change from previous years when snook and redfish were the objects.
The tournament kickoff is Friday, Sept. 17, at the Upper Keys Sailing Club, located at Mile Marker 100 bayside in Key Largo. An anglers and captains meeting, followed by a welcome party and silent auction, are set for 5-7 p.m.
Anglers can begin fishing as soon as festivities end and continue straight through until 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19. An awards dinner and both live and silent auctions are planned to start at 6 p.m.
First, second and third prizes will be awarded for the largest fish by length in each target species, in addition to other prizes.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit local Rotary scholarships and the Take Stock in Children Scholarship Program, a statewide initiative that awards two-year college scholarships to economically disadvantaged students in grades seven to 12, upon graduation.
The tournament entry fee is $125 per adult angler and $70 per young angler.
