BOCC surprised by hidden raises
Prompts talk of capping salaries

Raises given to 13 Monroe County Attorney's Office staff earlier this year have concerned some county commissioners, who did not know about the hikes before they went into effect and say the situation leaves them considering salary caps.

Raises were given to attorneys, their assistants and paralegals, records show. Assistant County Attorney Bob Shillinger's annual salary inc...

Seriously, it's time we cleaned house. Fire THEM ALL and then

hire people who want the jobs, at a reasonable rate. NO ONE 'DESERVES' RAISES in a down economy. What is wrong with these people? Fire ANY administrator who does not make fiscally sound decisions. They did it in California. We can do it here. I'd love nothing more than to get rid of ALL of these whiners who think they 'deserve' raises. If the taxpayers are tightening their belts to make ends meet, the government employees must too.

For your information

[$143,000 County Pay Raise] KW Citizen wrote that “Non-union county employees did not get raises this year” That is totally, flat out wrong. The chart below is direct from the county personnel dept. This is public information, available to anybody for the asking. Somebody lied to the KW Citizen reporter and the KW Citizen did not do proper fact checking. Also, years 2008 and 2009 had salary increases. So nobody ever say county employees are not getting raises, because county public records prove they are. What this really proves is that the county is living beyond its means (the ability of the taxpayers to support their employees.) If the county was a private sector employer, the CEO and Board of Directors would be looking at employee layoffs. If the BOCC is really serious about the 2011 budget and cutting spending they must start taking back these raises, if even temporarily. Don't let any press story or county staff person say otherwise because most departments' 2011 proposed budgets are requesting more money, more staff or both. http://www.monroecounty-fl.gov/pages/MonroeCoFL_Budget/budgets . Lawyers aren't the only educated ones on County staff

Well Ms. Hutton, there are several County departments that have well educated employees with Bachelors and Masters degrees, making $40,000 & $50,000/year. Don't they deserve a raise? Why does Monroe County have Deputy County Administrators with barely a high school education making over $100,000/year? Why does Kevin Wilson (self proclaimed Mr. Climate Change), special friend of the Administrator get a 33% raise? Where is the fairness? When is the nepotism and corruption going to stop? Miss Hutton, why did you allow the Commissioners and Administrator to take the 3% raises off the table? Yes, it was only 3% but it would had made the employees feel appreciated and would have raised the morale. The corruption that exists in Monroe County is absolutely mind blowing! I don't know what made me believe that once the Gang of Three left things would change for the better. It seems that we voters may have to make a clean sweep.

20 to 30 years' professional experience.....BS

There are NASA engineers working at McDonald's. There are plenty of attorney's willing to take a county job for 82k a year in the economy. Suzanne, you ignorant......

I once thought Carruthers had balls, but she's proven to be just another politician - SHAME ON YOU Heather.

Shame to you Ms. Hutton for not understanding fiscal responsibility. YOU REALLY think someone's quitting a county job in this economy? AND IF THEY ARE AFTER 20-30 years, we don't need that ignorant thinking anymore anyways.

We see the ignorance of government officials still exists. SO do we elect this Hutton or who elected is responsible for this ignorance... Heather and who are we remembering at election time.

Everybody in local

Everybody in local government needs to realize that the Department of Corrections has a warm cell, 3-squares a day, and stylish clothing just waiting for them; all they have to do is something stupid to claim it.

When Hutton

said she was moving the previuosly outsourced legal work into the county to save money she failed to mention that any money she saved was going to raises. Typical legal manuever of telling ther truth, just not ALL the truth. I have a way the BOCC can recoup this money: Fire Hutton. BTW, how come Nugent didn't know about this "policy"?. He's certainly been around long enough.

Well Deserved

These are some of the most hardworking professional staff in the County. The disgusting thing is that even with this raise they still don't earn what the senior lackey's running Key West earn. There's the real crime.

State Attorneys office

The STATE Attorney's office is not the COUNTY Attorney's office. Please read a little more carefully so you can understand what the article is actually about. It's the COUNTY Atttorney who gave out raises.

BOCC

I have read this article twice. WHAT is BOCC an acronym for?

Board of County

Board of County Commissioners. or Board of Corrupt Commissioners

Hmm...sure doesn't look good...

...when the top brass gets huge raises in this tough economy. I'm not worried, soon technology will advance enough to outsource their jobs too. We can let millions of internet connected minds make our legal decisions for us, get far better results at less the cost in the bargain.

::sigh:: Different day, same crooked crap. What part of being

fiscally responsible do these people not understand??? The taxpayers are SICK of funding big raises for government employees. If they want more money, they can go work in the private sector and see what they get for the same amount of work. The size of these raises are outrageous too. I mean, really - $15,000 a year to Shillinger and $6,000 - $7,000 each for the others?

Why didn't they think of this when Kohl was there?

Kohl was paying his two top assistants nearly $12k a month and shortchanging everyone else. Why didn't the BOCC complain then? Now that Ward is being fairer in order to keep talented and experienced prosecutors, the BOCC wants to complain? What a bunch of clowns.

BOCC is CLUELESS as Usual. Apparently the Citizen too!

The Office of the State Attorney is funded by the STATE OF FLORIDA. The budget for each office is approved by the Legislature of the State of Florida, not the County. How dumb are our bubbas? Well we have certainly learned they know nothing about criminal law until they are charged with crimes. The County is legally obligated to provide office space and certain support services. The salary of any assistant state attorney is up to THE STATE ATTORNEY. The County has NOTHING to say about it because they do NOT pay any part of that salary. This is just nonsense because they don't want the lobbying rules and want to continue to be bubba's doing bubba deals with their friends.

Huh? The article isn't about the STATE Attorney's office.

It's about the County attorney's office - the ones who advise our county government on legal matters and who handle the law suits. DUH.

Talk about clueless.

Dan, considering the length of your comment and how strongly you feel about it, perhaps you should have spent a little more time reading the article. It's about the COUNTY attorney's office.

???

You are about as ignorant as can be with your Bubba BS . I just can't understand why people like you stay in Key West !

hey steve

Didn't you know? Key West is welcoming to ALL........ just check out the resources for homeless bums. Everyone gets treated very well here. It's a free for all in Key West, unless you are a level headed, hard working, tax paying, and honest citizen. It's a great place to live on the backs of others!
