Library announces myriad programming changes

The Monroe County Library's Key West branch this summer shifted its collection, introduced a new catalog and website, and changed some of its programming.

The children's story hours will resume on Wednesday and Friday mornings, but starting at 11 a.m. The program is geared toward toddlers, from 10 months to 2 years old, on Wednesdays and for preschoolers, age 3 to 5, on Fridays.

For new parents, the Baby & Me group continues to meet in the Children's Room at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays.

Other programming for kids includes the family hour at 1 p.m. Saturdays, the Teen/Tween Club at 3:30 p.m. Saturdays and the Teen Library Advisory group at 4:30 p.m. Fridays.

For more information on children's programming, contact Senior Children's Librarian Nancy Howanitz at 305-292-3595 or howanitz-nancy@monroecounty-fl.gov.

The Tuesday movie matinees return with free screenings at 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The library also is starting a new film festival at 10 a.m. Saturdays. The festival will focus on a different theme each month; September's is banned books. Those screenings are free and open to all. For more information on movies at the library, contact Reference Librarian Robin Henderson at 305-292-3595 or Henderson-robin@monroecounty-fl.gov.

The Book Bites book club returns in October at a new time, 4:30 p.m., on the second Thursday of the month. The Oct. 14 meeting will feature vampire literature, so readers can choose anything bloodthirsty, from Bram Stoker's classic "Dracula" to Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels, the Twilight trilogy or Justin Cronin's dystopian blockbuster, "The Passage." For more information, contact Circulation Librarian Kris Neihouse at 305-292-3595 or neihouse-kris@monroecounty-fl.gov.

The library's free computer classes also resume in September; classes are already full but registration for October classes will begin Sept. 11. The Thursday morning classes will teach keyboarding, saving and finding information, Word I and Word II. The Word classes will also be held on Saturday mornings Oct. 23 and 30. To register, stop by the reference department or call 305-292-3595 starting on Sept. 11.

The knitting and needlework group, which began last year, also returns this month. That group will meet at 3:30 p.m. in the library conference room on the third Friday of the month; the first meeting will be Sept. 17. For more information, contact Library Assistant Nan Klingener at 305-292-3595 or klingener-nan@monroecounty-fl.gov.

Legal Services of the Florida Keys continues to meet with any member of the public from 3 to 5 p.m. on the second Friday of the month in the conference room. For more information, contact Roselin Munoz at 877-715-7464 or rmunoz@lsgmi.org.

The library is at 700 Fleming St., at the corner of Elizabeth Street. Library hours and other information about the library and upcoming events are also available on the Web at http://www.keyslibraries.org.
