Oil removed from grounded boat
The Coast Guard said it and oil-spill contractors on Friday safely removed more than 600 gallons of oil from a 49-foot powerboat that ran aground Aug. 29 on Grecian Rocks Reef within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Weather initially prevented the work on the Lisern II, which was done ahead of any salvage to prevent pollution. There was no evidence of any oil in the water, nor a breach in the hull, the Coast Guard said. The oil was taken ashore, where it will be disposed of properly, reports say.
The sanctuary is working with the boat owner, who was not named, to contact a salvage company to remove the vessel from the reef. The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
