KEY WEST -- Fishing for elusive shallow-water gamefish is the primary attraction in the Robert James Sales S.L.A.M. Celebrity Tournament, set to draw anglers, guides and celebrities to Key West Friday through Sunday.
The popular catch-and-release event pits participants against tarpon, permit and bonefish, widely regarded as the "big three" of the flats. Scoring all three on the same day is known as a flats grand slam.
The S.L.A.M. is the first in an annual Florida Keys trilogy of angling challenges that raises money for the fight against cystic fibrosis.
Celebrity participants are to include Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, noted for his stellar career with the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays; NASA space shuttle astronaut Bruce Melnick, who participated in the Endeavor and Discovery missions; former Denver Broncos football player Mark Cooper, who was the 2009 tournament's celebrity grand champion, and saxophone superstar Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.
Participants earn points by catching and releasing fish in the fly, artificial or bait categories, with prizes awaiting the champion anglers, teams and guides. In addition, the grand champion angler qualifies for the 2011 Florida Keys Outfitters/International Game Fish Association Inshore World Championship.
The Superfly, a one-day, one-fly tournament sponsored by The Angling Company in Key West, is to take place Friday with registration at 6 p.m. today at the Hurricane Hole Restaurant & Marina, 5110 Overseas Highway, on Stock Island, which is a change in venue from that previously announced. The awards ceremony for the Superfly will be at 5 p.m., Friday.
Registration for the S.L.A.M. itself is set for 4-6 p.m., Friday, at the Doubletree Grand Key Resort, 3990 S. Roosevelt Blvd. A captains meeting follows.
Fishing in the S.L.A.M. is to run 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Celebrities, anglers and the Redbone family are to gather for 3-5 p.m. dockside parties both days at the Hurricane Hole Restaurant & Marina.
Other social events, including live and silent auctions, are to take place at the Doubletree Grand Key Resort.
The S.L.A.M.'s $3,500 team entry fee includes two days of guided fishing and admission to tournament social functions for two team anglers and their guests. The Superfly entry fee is $350 per angler who also fishes the S.L.A.M. or $500 per angler otherwise. Superfly entry does not include the services of a guide.
