KW picks up victory in Havana
Matysik to Behmke scores pair; Swiecki adds Penalty Kick

HAVANA, Cuba

The Key West Strikers came out firing and defeated Team Playa, 3-0, Tuesday in the last day of the First Annual Copa-Amistad Tournament. The Strikers finished third in the five-team tournament with a tie to go along with its lone victory and two losses.

Adam Swiecki was tripped in the box and scored the Strikers' first goal on his penalty kick.

Early in the second half, Key West's Jack Behmke headed in a Patrick Matysik corner kick for a 2-0 lead. A little while later it was deja vu -- a Jack Behmke score off a Patrick Matysik corner kick.

A brief closing ceremony took place after the games with Striker coach Tom Coward giving a short speech in Spanish, expressing his appreciation for the incredible hospitality that has been shown to the Key West contingent, as well as reiterating his hope that this will be the first of many such trips for Key West teams.

The tournament results were: Team Marianao, Team Cerro, Key West Strikers, Team Plaza and Team Playa.

After the closing ceremony, the players crowded on the field exchanging gifts, handshakes, high fives and taking many photos.

On Monday, the Key West group took a bus trip over to the next province, Pinar del Rio, and to Las Terrazas which like a state park. They took a 4 km hike to "Los Banos de San Juan" ("The baths of San Juan"). They had a lunch of roasted pork or chicken, black beans/rice, and yuca. The pork was from a pig roasting over a coal fire.

The players spent over an hour jumping, diving, flipping off the river bank. Several bought Spanish limes in a handwoven basket from a Cuban girl for one peso.

When they returned to their hotel, they enjoyed a "brutally competitive" water basketball tournament.
