Planned fire goes rogue
'Controlled' 21-acre blaze in Key deer refuge burns 100 acres

A planned 21-acre burn on Big Pine Key turned into a wildfire that was blazing across 100 acres Thursday evening, injuring two firefighters and keeping hundreds of residents from their homes.

The fire in the National Key Deer Refuge was 80 percent contained by 7 p.m., authorities said, but added that the fire would not be extinguished by Thursday night. Some 120 families...

Al Gore

This proves there is global warming!!!! Or something.

This is the same group that won't let

you clear your lot because you are destroying habitat for endangered species. And so the pendulum of inconsistant and arbitrary rules continues to swing back and forth against developement as the Key Deer eat from the hands that feed them....why can't we clear our lot? It would be better to burn the habitat?

Firefighters

So the Feds screwed it up and Monroe County's finest firefighters handled it! Just goes to prove that Station 13 has some damn good firefighters. Keep it up Guys, some of us out here do appreciate you!

Morkill has to go!

Ok, so I’ll be the first to say it. Anne Morkill from the Refuge Manager for the National Key Deer Refuge has to go. Not tomorrow, not next week, not at the end of the fiscal year, NOW!! She is completely over her head and needs to transfer somewhere else. From the complete mishandling of the feral cat situation, the out of controlled prescribed burn that threatened both residents AND sensitive wildlife, and not to mention a completely biased stance on the electricity issue on No Name, Ms. Morkill is a complete and total failure at her position. What a travesty. Go back to wherever you came from Anne, you’re a failed experiment in the Keys.

No one in this ridiculous county

Could organize a piss up in a brewery.

Can happen to anyone really

Long time ago, a small simple trash burn pit got out of control when the wind changed direction suddenly and greatly increased speed on one of the outer islands. Burnt up several acres of sea oats and almost took out a couple of structures before the beach stopped it. Needless to say we never worked so hard and so feverishly shoving sand as fast as we could for hours on end, wound up with entire bodies full of pulled muscles that took weeks to heal as a result. Luckily the Feds didn't find out and the buildings were spared, some heavy rains came a few weeks later to help regrow the sea oats, but we came close to buying a pump sprayer and a lot of green paint. We wish to pass on some advice, dig a deep hole if possible with high sidewalls, or use a metal drum, have something to cover it with in a hurry less less the weather changes fast because it does.

Kids with matches

These firefighters are like little kids with matches. I sat along the side of KDB & watched one set more fires while a helicopter was dumping water on the out of control burn.

Key venison, anyone?

Jeez, these Keysters can't even start a fire properly.

Mmmmmmm.....

Mmmmmm....key venison....yummers!!!

If the story is correct...

... and the authorities blame it on a drop in humidity from 52% to mid-30s, they're... well, blowing smoke. 52% is pretty low humidity for here this time of year. And it's how wet the ground and vegetation is, i.e. how recently it's rained, and how much, that makes the difference... not the relative humidity. Somebody blew it bad.

Hmmmmm...

Can you say "giant screw-up"?

Burning Man

They should have called in my friend The Burning Man. He has experience with large wild fires. Mucho fuego mucho fuego! Crazy Leo and the fleet can attest to that.
