KEY WEST -- Key West High righthander Chris Garcia, who was outstanding in last Friday's preseason game, will start tonight's season opener against Pompano Beach at the Bash at the Beach at Rex Weech Field. Game time is 7:30, following a 2 p.m. game between Dr. Krop and Pompano Beach.
Senior righthander Garret Pita pitches against Dr. Krop at 11 a.m., Saturday. If Key West reaches Saturday's 6 p.m. championship game, coach Miguel Menendez said shortstop Mikey Abreu would be the likely starter. Garcia was 7-2 a year ago, while Pita was 3-2 and Abreu 2-2.
Menendez said that Darren Miller, considered the No. 2 pitcher on the staff behind Garcia, would be held back for Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. District 16-4A contest against Coral Shores at Rex Weech.
