Board mulls charter school caps

Schools Superintendent Jesus Jara wants to cap enrollment at the district's six charter schools this fall, planning ahead to avoid any costly surprises when the schools submit a head count to the state.

His proposed amendment to the charters' contracts allows for an additional 309 charter school students, a 24 percent spike from the current total enrollment of 972 students a...

Think your school administrators are certified? Think again!

Double check your public school principals' and assistant principals' certifications. In every other district in Florida, Educational Leadership, the result of a prescribed sequence of graduate-level coursework and a passing score on the lengthy and difficult Florida Educational Leadership Exam, is a REQUIREMENT of all applicants for administrative positions. Only in Monroe can an individual obtain certification as a "School Principal," a district-awarded certification, WITHOUT first having earned Educational Leadership. This is the fall-out of the Bubba system. I invite everyone to look up their administators' credentials on www.fldoe.org. Start with Amber Bosco, Chris Valdez, Christina Mc Pherson, and Harry Russell.

If the community thinks that

If the community thinks that Charter Schools are they way to escape from everything that is happening with our public schools then they are in for a rude awakening. Teachers in our public schools must hold a Highly Qualified status on their certificate; administrators must be certified in Educational Leadership. However, there are some charter school administrators who do not hold a Professional Educator's Certificate non the less are certified in Educational Leadership, but the Board still allows them to run the charter school? How is this so?

There is a Superintendent

There is a Superintendent that is applying for the job he holds and he doesn't even fit the criteria.

Another embarrassment

A reasonable person would think that if parents were removing their children from the public schools in favor of charter schools there is a problem with the pubic school system. Instead of recognizing this and trying to modify or improve the public school system our board wants to limit the competition. Another embarrassment.

Sure....

...why provide a better education for more students? Let's limit them. When are your kids coming to KWHS, Dr. Jara?

Well

Just because he wants it doesnt make it so. If your a charter school and you didnt sign for this to begin with, dont sign now. You can refuse, in order for this to take effect both sides have to agree and sign.

jesus before you keep

jesus before you keep parents form choosing the right school for their children why don't you think, why are my children not in Monroe County schools? It is unfair that you run a school district, that many do not trust, you have done nothing to bring back that trust, now you want to limit the choice parents have. You have a choice do to your way to high salary and you keep your kids out of Monroe County. I see a cross with your name out it.
