Memorial weekend mayhem keeps cops busy

FLORIDA KEYS -- By Monday morning, Monroe County law enforcement officers had already had a busy Memorial Day weekend with 30 road accidents, boat capsizings, a stabbing and a drunk 260-pound Winter Park man who reportedly assaulted cops outside a Marathon bar.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin reported 30 vehicle accidents of varying degrees as of early Monday morning, including separate vehicle crashes at mile markers 101.5 and 102.2 that sent three people to Mariners Hospital.

A motorcycle accident Saturday evening at mile marker 99 also resulted in the driver being taken to Mariners.

A 41-year-old Homestead man, Lazaro Ayala, was arrested after he allegedly stabbed a man in the face, stomach, chest and arm at the Fiesta Key Campground on Long Key. The victim received stitches at Mariners Hospital and was released. Ayala went to jail charged with aggravated battery.

Jeffrey Baxter Causey, 50, at 6-foot-1 and 260 pounds, was allegedly interfering with Marathon Fire and Rescue personnel as they were tending to a woman who had fallen and had a possible head injury.

Sheriff's Officer Jon B. Huff said Causey was threatening both law enforcement and paramedics. When Sgt. Joel Slough attempted to keep Causey away from the paramedics, the Winter Park man attempted to strike the officer. Causey was Tazed several times before officers were able to restrain him.

As of Monday morning, two boats had capsized off Key Largo and in Snake Creek, but no injuries were reported, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Three BUI arrests had been made.
