Sugarloaf to get career firefighters
Agreement marks the end of an era of all-volunteer departments in the Keys

A tentative agreement will add two paid Monroe County firefighters to the previously all-volunteer firehouse on Sugarloaf Key, thus ensuring a response from the station on weekdays, officials announced Monday night.

The move -- which could come as soon as July 1 -- would mean the sun has set on the last all-volunteer fire protection force in the Florida Keys, but officials...

So the paid guys at the cudjoe station four miles away can't respond??????? This is crazy... Next they will want new fire trucks because the fuel tanks are empty...

Duh

There are no fire stations on Cudjoe, that is a Sheriff station.

Sugarloaf

County Fire Station 11 is located at the 21mm next to the sheriffs office. Three full time fire fighters are stationed there 24/7. It is only 3.5 miles from the Sugarloaf volunteer station. Sounds like a huge waste of tax payers money. Perhaps they could spend the money on our huge sewer hook up charge instead.
