Keys schools mostly A-rated
Grades drop sharply statewide; rule changes, tougher FCAT blamed

The state gave A ratings to three-quarters of Monroe County public schools this year, despite a year of tougher standardized tests and other rule changes that had administrators across Florida bracing for Wednesday's release of the annual grades.

Statewide, fewer schools made A's and more bombed with D's and F's compared with last year's results.

But scho...

Vocational Education

Vocational education for our kids ended when the School Board fired Mark Hooper. His efforts in giving our kids vocational programs was endless. A Habitat construction program where students and community members built a home that is lived in by a teacher from Switlik. Award winning culinary programs Keys wide. Auto, health, art, video production, and numerous other programs that benefited ALL students regardless if they were going to college or into the workforce. With him gone, ALL of these programs are either gone or drastically reduced. What a shame that the School Board is so vindictive.....

Board short sighted and vindictive under inadequate leadership

the school board chair and his bully puppet Jara have destroyed thriving counseling, prevention, intervention, discipline and alternative education programs as well as the vocational programs. We lose competent effective staff and ultimately our kids due to a pathethically petty political agenda. It's inexcusable!

Vocational Education

If the MCSD really wanted to help with the preparation of life for M C students there would be vocational training starting in Middle School. It is appalling that there is no woodworking/metal working/electricity/plumbing/AC training here at any of the keys schools anymore. "Student success...Whatever it takes"...what a joke. Time to rip that sign down

The sign came down but no one's reading the new one...

"Student success - whatever it takes" is an old slogan from the Acevedo era. The new ome is "Continuous improvement..." but no one is reading that sign, either. When the budget has been reduced by $13 million, class periods reduced from 7 to 6 (in the middle & high schools) & scores of teachers laid off or allowed to retire and not be replaced, both slogans are a joke. Time to vote all of those stingy Republicans out of office....

WRONG ON THAT

Andy Griffiths is no stingy republican - he is a fumbling democrat and, like his idol President Obama, Griffiths has no record to run on. So let's vote both of the democrats out.

Isn't this a shame...

Schools get an A, students get an "F" for common sense and skills from employers - ask any business in town.
Step an figure out a curriculum that matches real world education with FCATs.
