2nd, bigger Publix opens Thursday

Key West's North Roosevelt Boulevard will once again be home to three large supermarkets on Thursday, when Publix opens a second, larger store in the former Albertsons building in Key Plaza shopping center.

After months of speculation and rumors, company representatives confirmed this week that Key West will be home to two Publix supermarkets within a mile of each other. There are no plans to close the existing Publix in Searstown shopping center, and the new store will be a traditional Publix with expanded offerings, said spokeswoman Maria Brous, dispelling local rumors that the former Albertsons could become a Greenwise Market, an organic subsidiary of Publix.

Both stores will operate under the Publix name, Brous said, adding that the new, larger store will feature an expanded selection of health, natural and organic food products.

It also is to offer more Hispanic food products and locally caught seafood, including Key West pink shrimp and a variety of locally caught fish.

The company is working toward more localized sourcing for products such as seafood, Brous said, and the new Key West location will be an example of that.

The soup and salad bar -- a popular feature of the former Albertsons -- will return to the new Publix with more daily soup options, Brous said.

Kevin Piper, longtime store manager at the current Publix, has been named manager of the new location, and Kim Seitz was promoted to replace Piper in the Searstown location.

Brous said the close proximity of the two stores is not entirely uncommon, and the situation is similar in Miami Beach, where two stores are just a stone's throw from each other.

"It's really based on the community -- the traffic that goes through and what it can support," she said.

The new store will open at 7 a.m. Thursday. Both Publix locations will operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday until 10 p.m., leaving Winn-Dixie as the only 24-hour supermarket in Key West.

Not Organic Greenwise but less competition in town now

Now that Albertsons will become the new Publix we will have only 2 major chain grocery stores in town - with one store holding two prime locations. Up north, that means less competition and higher prices. No, the new location Publix won't be greenwise or organic totally but will have a greater variety, a few more specialty foods, expanded shelf selection and, of course, with that comes higher priced food. I predict you will soon see that fancy jar or organic food or gourmet bottle you wanted. And you will pay more for it - much more - because where else in town are you going to shop? Convenience and location. A new place. Those of you who wanted the new store to have all those nice Albertson's sales or those Albertson's $5.00 off $50.00 weekly ad coupons or the Albertson's buy-2-get-1-free deals had better head to the mainland to shop. No more dishes/knives/wine glasses/pots and pans coupon giveaways. No more Monopoly promotion stickers. No, that left when the old store closed the doors. Here comes Publix part 2 - get ready for the shock. You think Faustos is high, just wait. This new Publix will have you flocking to the Weekley joint in a New York second. For a town that thrives on tourists but wants to keep the locals happy, this one is sure slim pickings when it comes to grocery stores. But hey, if you wanted a place that would double your coupons but not your total food bill, you wouldn't live in Key West. I have no idea how so many locals can feed their families. But hey, there is always the Dollar Store and Ramen Noodles!

Please just go all organic.

Please just go all organic. There are a bunch of us that will support such a store.

I'm with you, George.

But I'm about 100% organic now. I buy some at Publix, most at Help Yourself, and a bit at Faustos on Fleming. I also buy a lot online because our local stores just don't care to carry what we find healthy.

It can be done.

by a bunch do you mean 10 or

by a bunch do you mean 10 or 12? organic foods are way too expensive and only a small percentage would pay those prices. bring prices down to affordable levels and i would even shop there, till then those stores will continue to struggle to compete with everyone else.

I suggest you do some research.

Are you aware that if when you buy organic fruits and vegetables, you get 2 or 3 times the nutrients you get in the irradiated, warehouse-stored garbage that is not organic? You have to buy TWO or THREE times non-organic to get the same nutrients as organic. How cost effective is that??? Generally, the non-organic was picked very green, stored in warehouses for up to 6 months, then gassed and irradiated to make it 'pretty' for you. There are minimal nutrients.

AND you're guaranteed of pesticides and other poisons in non-organic foods. And let's not forget the GMO's. Have you factored that in? Remember, as an example, all non-organic corn in the US (and that includes all corn products such as corn starch and your beloved high-fructose corn syrup) are now classified by the FDA as a PESTICIDE. No country in Europe and no one in Asia and not even Mexico will allow US grown corn into their countries. Yet you just eat it up, right?

And it all goes 'downstream' in the food supply. That pesticide corn is fed to that non-organic poultry, beef, and pork you buy, as well as any farm-raised fish. So sure, you're paying less, but you're getting even less than that and all that added value of poison. It's cumulative.

You get what you pay for and you are what you eat. And...you can pay now for healthy, nutritious food, or you can pay later with medical costs. Your choice.

fresh fruit, veggies, even

fresh fruit, veggies, even your beloved corn on the cob stored for six months in a warehouse... i don't think so. as for it being healthier, ur probably right, but organics are still way more expensive and when times are tough like they are now prices outweigh just about anything else. we'd all like to be wealthy like you, but that's just not reality.

Hope they match Albertson's sale prices

Albertson's frequently had the lowest prices. I continue to miss them.

the new slogan should be...

the new slogan should be... Publix, where shopping is too expensive!

Publix also wraps most of their produce in plastic wrap.

If you just need 1 zucchini for a dish you have to buy the whole package of 5. That's why I'm going to Winn Dixie for their produce even if it's not always the freshest. I can buy the quantities I want, not the amount Public's wants me to buy.

You are uninformed...

Publix will sell you whatever amount you want. If you want something in a package but not the whole thing, they will accomodate you. Just ask. Oh, and personally, I'd prefer the veggies that haven't been handled and touched by shoppers nasty hands.

Gotta agree with you on that.

All those snotty nosed kids handling the food? Gag!!!!

Do you really believe that those fruits and vegetables were not

handled by the pickers, sorters and packers? I always wash all my fruits and vegetables really well before I eat them. Packaging doesn't make them any cleaner. It's just the way the supermarket can make more $ Just went to the new Publics today their produce, dairy and meat is at least 50 cents higher, sure they have a few deals to lure you in but not enough for me to be a regular shopper!
