20 YEARS AGO

A father and son were arrested after they tried to steal the massive American flag flying over the bike shop on Truman Avenue.

Police found another slit cow's tongue with a gold ribbon near the Sheriff's Office. The police believed the tongues were Santeria offerings meant to magically influence certain people.

The City Electric System power plant on Stock Island was out of service for a week, causing power shortages.

50 YEARS AGO

Staff Sgt. Samuel Hannibal Jr. was assigned to Langley Air Force Base, Va., after completing the jet aircraft maintenance course. He was a graduate of Douglass High School.

Undercover agents from the state beverage department raided the Mardi Gras on Duval Street and Wylk's on Stock Island for violations of beverage laws, and arrested four B-girls for soliciting drinks.

Julio Avael was installed as president of the Elks Teenage Club 551 at an installation banquet held at the Hickory House.
