20 YEARS AGO

Despite the confusion caused by Hurricane Andrew, Monroe County elections were still held as planned.

Cuban refugees were still coming to South Florida in record numbers. The Coast Guard picked up 67 in one day, the most in a single day since the Mariel boatlift.

Workers from across the nation were working on the electric tieline to restore full power to the Keys.

50 YEARS AGO

Mrs. J. Edgar Willing died in Connecticut. She was one of the founders of the Key West Art & Historical Society and was instrumental in the establishment of the Martello Museum.

The Poinciana trees of the city were being stripped bare by inchworms and the city had no money for spraying.

The Monroe County Tax Equalization Board completed its work and accepted the tax rolls.
