20 YEARS AGO

Quick action from a salvage ship stopped a runaway barge that was headed for the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.

The electric tie-line to the mainland was taking longer than expected to repair and the Middle and Upper Keys were experiencing rotating black-outs.

Because of Hurricane Andrew the Immigration service in Miami could not pick up Cuban refugees landing in Key West so the White Street Baptist Church was proving temporary shelter.

50 YEARS AGO

The La Concha Hotel was getting a renovation with opening planned for October under the name of Town House Motor Inn.

The first meeting of the year for Key West Flight of the 9968th Air Reserve Squadron, Colonel Harold C. Campbell flight commander, was held at Key West High School.

Mervin Thompson of City Electric System was the speaker at the Junior Chamber of Commerce meeting.
