City OKs 3% tax hike

Key West taxpayers will face a 3 percent increase in the city portion of their property tax bill, following a Thursday night vote by commissioners, who approved the proposed budget at the first of two budget hearings.

Commissioners in previous meetings had proposed a 5 percent increase, but were able to hold the line at 3 percent, and include the addition of six public works...

budget

What does Comm Yaniz really know about budgeting. This is his first year in office and he is raising taxes (probably a Democrat) He has never owned or run a business, does not have a degree, and he says budgets are simple? I strongly disagree with him and his little one-liners that he thinks are funny. He treats this position like a joke and he is the master of ceremonies who is smarter than everyone else. The City has plenty of money in reserves and they could have used more than 1 days worth to balance the budget...instead they expect the citizens to pony up the difference for more public works employees. I bet new town will still look like a dump a year from now, just drive around town and look at the trash on the streets in his district. Yaniz will get my vote next time when "Pigs Fly"

I cannot afford.....

to live here on a retirement income.

Didn't do either

Yaniz said the following: "Budgets are simple. You either decrease services or you increase taxes," but the commission found a way to both increase services (in theory) and taxes. In the end, three more Bubbas have jobs, and everyone else pays more.

Absurd

Absurd for fixed income property owners. Block off another street, like Flagler or Kennedy and we can all stay home. No common sense. Only greed.

DAMN...

You mean they can find 6 CURRENT employees wasting time and my tax money to go clean streets? God I wish I could get out of this city...and before anyone says anything, I am a 61 y/old CONCH.

TCW

How many city workers are on workers comp? What it this costing the TAXPAYER?

This should go over well

with all the corruption and waste going on. But of course, these city officials are experts at balancing their own personal budgets and filling in their personal general ledger blanks with hard worked taxpayer dollars, so 3 percent must be a fair amount.

$1 PER FOOT per month

That's $1 per foot per month, John. For me, that's $40 a month, $480 a year, in addition to a CPI increase of at least 3%, adding another $164 a year. It might not sound like a lot but it'd be out of pocket. Retired and drawing Social Security, our income is fixed while expenses aren't.

It IS a lot

Add this to all the other "drops in the bucket" that the government has been dropping on us for thr last 3 years and pretty soon your bucket is overflowing.

Fire some of the slackers working for the City

There are plenty, also get rid of at least one of the asst managers, let our new manager do his job.

Thankfully under president

Thankfully under president Obama, 95 percent of working Americans received a tax cut. Due to the "dreaded" Obamacare, many on fixed incomes also received rebates from insurance companies who put too much money into overhead. Also, by closing the donut hole in Medicare, seniors saved money on prescriptions. If only our local Government could do as well. Of course, as soon as Roomney Ryan repeal all these things, fixed income folks will be in even more trouble.

Used to think...

that you were a dim bulb, 666, but now I know there is no light on at all. Stop the talking points BS, stop watching TV. Already, due to recent cuts by your beloved president, certain blood tests are being refused by medicare. Been there and have seen it in person. Obamacare is fine for children who cant leave home until they are 26. but the reason they cant leave home? No jobs!!!!

You can lie all you want

You can lie all you want harbor, seniors are smarter then that. There has not been any cuts other then to admin overhead. No tests have changed or refused, not a single benefit has been lowered, and all three points I made are true. It is too bad your hate or ignorance trumps your ability to understand facts. We can move forward, or back to the Bush era with more tax cuts for the wealthy and more deregulation. You see what that got us, right. You better run now, Hannity has some exciting news about a book on socialism Obama read when he was 5!

Wrong

Some tests are being denied and recipients have to sign a paper saying they will take responsibility for payment if they choose to get the certain lab work done. There are even posters up in some labs explaining all this. Get out in the real world. Once again you have posted talking points. Stop worrying about Hannity, OReily, Shultz, Maddow, Matthews et al and what they say. And stop blamimg others....its really looking foolish.
