20 YEARS AGO

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office towed a trailer that had been used as a "crack house" from the Water's Edge Trailer Park.

Hurricane Andrew was listed as a Category 4 hurricane and the third-most intense storm to hit this country in the 20th century.

The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority lifted all water restrictions and the plant returned to normal operations.

Philip Toppino, president of Charley Toppino and Sons Inc., was appointed to serve on the Advisory Council of Naval Affairs for the Sixth Naval District.

The Sheriff's Department reported that it patrolled 37,579 miles during August and that the average work week for deputies was 60 hours. The jail served 3,418 meals during the month at an average cost of $.32.

Myrtle E. Herndon of Sugarloaf Shores was the first volunteer from the Keys to join the Peace Corps and was assigned to Thailand.
