Big box store in future?

Jobs, tax revenue and not having to travel to Miami to Christmas-shop were the top benefits of a proposed shopping center with a big-box store chain on 33 acres on Rockland Key, according to a planner and a real estate agent pushing the project.

Private planner Owen Trepanier and Realtor Claude Gardner held a public meeting Monday night on Big Coppitt Key to hear residents'...

Key West Needs This

It's funny reading the squabbles over taxes and local businesses, when it's pretty apparent that you all fail to see the 800 lb gorilla rummaging through the fridge. It's called the internet. Amazon offers free 2 day shipping to its prime members and every product you could imagine for half the price of any local store. Why would I want to venture out into the nightmare that has become Key West traffic when I can sit at home in my PJs and have anything I want delivered right to my door? Now throw a "big box" retailer in there that doesn't make people feel like they're shopping in a dumpster (sorry KMART), and they might be more receptive to spending money there instead. At least then, the local economy gets a boost from employee wages and consumer cost savings. Think about it Key West, you need this.

Publix

Where were the "no growth" crowd when Publix opened its second store in KW???? A mile from the other one! Really does anyone think that is appropriate, needed or logical?

Perhaps those of you

who want a tropical island lifestyle void of all civilized shopping and other perks, should consider moving to Haiti or another third world country where you can grow your own food and live in organic mud huts. It seems you folks are the nouveau riche that can live on island time and don't work, or care about the prices you pay at your "boutiques".

Having a civilized shopping center on Rockland Key should not and would not affect your lives in any way. Why penalized the rest of us that live here and work here because of your own personal agendas and selfishness? Key West is already a dump so anything other than a new trendy store would be an asset.

This Walmart, If that's what coming is not going to be the same

as you see on the mainland. Walmart is now building mini Walmart in places such as NYC or places where there is not enough square footage or where the land values are too expensive such as the keys. The problem with having a Walmart on ROckland key is that it may put our local Kmart out of business, not to mention Sears. For all the people in this town that do not drive or own cars, it would be a disaster. Also just think how much it will slow down the north and southbound traffic when there are lines waiting to turn into and out of US1 a one lane highway. You think traffic is bad now, just wait, if a big box store moves up there, the road will be total gridlock!

Yippee!

Putting Kmart and Sears out of business is a GREAT thing. They are both sloppy out dated dinosaurs, clean sweep !!!

BigBox

Bring them all to town so all of your children can slave-away for $7.00/hr

In the real world

they pay $10 an hour. If they follow Home Depot's wage structure, that would mean they would pay $12 here.

...

Either that or they could build them in china.

...

Either that or they could build them in china.

I don't get it.

If Walmart were a country it would comprise the sixth largest trading partner with China. Do we really want to support China rather than our local economy? As George Carlin said, "Look at how stupid the average person is and realize half of them are stupider than that."

big box and big sales commission

ha ha ha, planner trepanier, and realtor Gardner. Curly, Larry, all they need is Moe..

Re: new development

I think it actually would be a good idea. The people that will be shopping there cannot afford to buy at the downtown overpriced merchants and normally would go to Homestead or Miami to shop. Might as well keep the tax revenue in Monroe rather than Miami -Dade County. The current K-mart and Sears stores are a joke so I really would not care if they went out of business.

What don't they get?

Why can't these greedy people understand that if we wanted to live where there are 'box stores', malls, chain stores and fast-food restaurants, we wouldn't live in the Keys? The appeal of life here is a laid-back island lifestyle, without the chaos of the mainland. Not only that, but haven't they been on Duval Street lately and seen all the vacant storefronts? Then there's the disaster near Schooner Wharf where greed displaced the trailor park to build a monstrocity no one wanted to live in. Leave they Keys alone, already! Most of the charm here has been paved over and abandoned.

I think you are the one who

I think you are the one who really does not get it. The average worker in Key West cannot afford to buy locally. Have you seen the prices that our local merchants are charging? The vacant storefronts on Duval street are caused by Greedy Landlords charging to much rent and city fathers not willing to do anything about it. Duval street will not be affected one bit by a box store on Big Coppitt Key. And trailer parks, give me a break the next big hurricane that hits the Keys will destroy them all anyway.

Target, Whole Foods, Trader

Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, would all be awesome! Just build it and they will come! Anything bua WalMart or I and many others will put every effort into protestesting and making sure that development never happens

They will come...for about

They will come...for about the first 6 to 9 months. Then sales will slack off because the newness has worn off. Teens and young adults want Target but don't have the money to sustain it. Whole Foods and Trader Joes will prove to be too expensive for Key Wester's taste. Personally, I'll take water and electric over organic.

Trader Joe's cheaper than Publix

The problem is that Trader Joe's is not in Florida and has no plans at the moment. Unless there are stores all over So Florida, the cost of distribution is high.

Actually

in the real world Target is popular with all ages and documented as having cheaper prices than Wal-Mart. Altho a Wal-Mart Supermarket (not a super center) is way cheaper than Publix or Winn Dixie. If Kmart can last all the years it has here, a fresh store selection will thrive.

I still remain worried about

I still remain worried about the malls on North Roosevelt becoming vacant. All the tax benefits will be drained out of Key West and go to the County. I hope people get what this will do to our Tax Base in Key West when stores like Home Depot, Sears, Ross, Publix and others leave for this mall, or are driven out of business by the competitors here. You know the end result will be higher taxes (and therefore higher rents) in town.

Good

If it means the shut-down of crooked, tasteless, disgusting t-shirt shops on Duval, I'm all for it.

Those shops would not be

Those shops would not be effected. Our low end trashy drunk tourist demographic buys those, after the stop at Walgreens for cheap beer. The stores on North Roosevelt would be the ones to go, along with a big chunk of The City tax base.

Oh please,

give us a normal Target and a Wal-Mart Supermarket! I'm so very tired of not having a decent place to shop. People whine about how corrupt Key West has become, so we might as well climb out of our third world status!

No Walmart

Target---ok. Walmart--No.

I Hate This

I am totally, totally against this whole idea. You are just talking about a larger KMart. A Kohls might be nice, to buy clothes, but a big box store ? I work hard to buy thoughtful Christmas gits, LOCALLY, and it is not that hard. If that doesn't work for you, there is always EBay. Come on, people, think of the number of people (& businesses) that could be destroyed for 'jobs, revenue & Christmas shopping'. In the end you will lose other revenue & jobs. Plus have more vacant buildings. (Which we will probably have plenty of while the boulevard is being worked on.) Please consider the traffic nightmares on a stretch of road that is already fairly dangerous. And consider your current quality of life. Would you rather live in Homestead ?

Who are we kidding?

Key West sold out long ago- to sleazy T shirt shops and a Walgreens in a historic building. We need a big store to replace that dirty little porn store anyway. For once commissioners do what those who elected you want you to do!!
