Pit Bull festival in Oct.

The Florida Keys Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (FKSPCA) will host a festival dedicated to pit bulls and pit mixes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at the animal shelter on Stock Island.

"Adopt a Bull," will feature a vaccine and microchip clinic from 12 to 2 p.m. and a shelter open house. Each vaccine and microchip is $10.

The shelter also will present a book-signing by author Cammeron Batanides, who wrote "Meet Panda." Free refreshments and face painting for children will be offered. For more information, call 305-294-4857.

New early-voting hours adopted

Monroe County will hold early voting hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct 27 through Nov. 3 in advance of the Nov. 6 general election, the assistant supervisor of elections announced.

The county will offer the following early voting sites starting Saturday, Oct. 27: The Supervisor of Elections Offices in Key West, Marathon and Key Largo; and the public libraries in Big Pine Key and Islamorada.

County Supervisor of Elections Harry Sawyer was the last hold-out in Florida to adopt the new schedule, which has the same number of hours in fewer than 12 days. Sawyer, a Republican, conceded only after the U.S. Justice Department approved the new plan but believes 12 days is better for voters.
