Pub gets massive payout from BP
Revenue losses due to oil spill estimated at $650K

A popular Duval Street bar stands to receive more than $600,000 in loss damages related to the 2009 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, marking it one of the biggest single such payouts in the Florida Keys since the cash claims began, a Key West lawyer said Tuesday.

Irish Kevin's bar was notified Monday by the Deepwater Horizon Claims Center that it will be receiving a check for...

Well doesn't that just beat all...I wonder with all this brew ha ha if they really will get it.Not something that you really want to boast about now is it?I suppose some wish they had gotten on that bandwagan...and ya know what? I'm thinking that SOME of them are trying to do just that after seeing this.So anyone who was mortified by the oil spill START FILING.!! Just sayin...

Bunch of Sour Grapes

More power to them. All the comments here are sour grapes. The comments stink of jealousy and envy. They applied, they jumped through the hoops, they got money-Welcome to America. If you don't like it, tough.

Your Money

They got your money! I dont like giving my money away to the crooks.

Ok

You helped pay for this....and you dont even know it.

My Prediction

Payout today. Indictment tomorrow.

Don't ge mad

get even people. Boycott them in every way possible. Do not go there, do not recommend them as a tourist stop. Perhaps that will give them a true taste of losing business.

What's worse than an oil spill?

What's worse than an oil spill?. The vultures who profit from them. At least the oil spill was an accident, not premeditated larceny!!!! Disgusting and shameful.

What a crock!

I don't see how any bar here could have lost 600k due to the oil spill. Why didn't lots of bars and other businesses file? How did they ever prove this amount and how can you claim it wasn't your own bad business practices or whatever. There is something rotten here.

Wheel of Fortune

This is better than the lottery! Well, there are the lawyer fees. 40%?

This is nothing but THEFT.

Where is the oversight on dispensing these funds? This is an outrage and if not outright illegal, it should be.

BP made a mistake-- a big one-- and they should pay. But they should pay people (such as those along the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts) who really suffered long-term financial losses-- not leeches out to suck blood money from large corporations.

Everyone who lives here knows that we lost absolutely nothing during the period of the spill. In fact, all the tourist dollar numbers were up for virtually every business in Key West. We picked up the business which fled from the Gulf Coast.

Finally, I didn't think my opinion of Horan could go any lower, but this display of avaricious ambulance-chasing has driven it lower than low. I hope he gets prosecuted along with these bar owners.

This Infuriates Me !!

This is SO wrong & makes me furious. There was no oil spill in Key West. And the past 3 tourist seasons have been HUGE. This is nothing more than blatant cheating. My son-in-law lived in Baton Rouge, where there was a devastating effect to the economy. He and many others lost their jobs due to lack of business. He was out of work for 15 months. He applied with B-P (an HONEST claim) and was denied. He was finally able to find a job in Birmingham. My daughter & son-in-law paid for the move. Can you say 'Good-bye savings' ? If Irish Kevin's (or anyone else in KW) wants to file a claim against the idiots who have torn up the boulevard, at least that would make sense & be honest. Shame on you, Irish Kevin's & the rest of the cheaters & liars out there !!

Irish Kevins

As a former entrepreneur having started 7 businesses in my 45 year career, one of which was a restaurant/bar, and in Key West retirement working in several retail establishments during and after the oil leak, I find it mind blowing that such an amount, any amount, was paid if based upon this business grossing $203,514 less in the year of the spill. I am assuming the $203,514 was lost gross sales and not profit; your paper does not specify. The establishments I worked for during and after the spill did not have ANY loss of revenue in 2009, and, my wife, who worked at two major Key West hotels, states that they experienced no loss of business in 2009. How forensic accountants and/or the BP claims process can conclude that such a loss at one business was directly related to the oil leak is beyond comprehension. Did they research the gross incomes of ALL similar businesses on Duval and find that they all experienced such a downturn? If those businesses did, they should ALL have submitted a claim for they missed the boat. I suspect that many or most did not experience a loss of income in 2009. Good for the owners of Irish Kevin's; bad for BP stockholders many of whom are/were people (and institutions such as pensions)just like you and me. America the beautiful!

Greed

If more people came to Key West that year than the year before, the hotels were full, spent more money, not sure why bars have a right to that money. Maybe people didn't want to go to Irish Kevins for drinks. Maybe other bars had better prices and food...Is GREED the issue here. Are all bars suing for money...all restaurants? T shirt shops? art galleries? museums? the artists and performers at Mallory? Do you think that Irish Kevins will share any of that money with the waitresses and bar tenders who didn't make as much and will they track down staff who left because they didn't make the income they needed.

That is just stupid.

That is just stupid. Numbers where up that year. How did Kevin's loose out on money? Bad management, lazy owners, bad investments (Oceanside). Next BP will be paying them because they opened a restaurant in a bad location. And by the way, Irish kevin's is not a pub, it is a bar. A pub has character, and not just a warehouse of drunks.

Great Scam!

You have got to be kidding me...I bet they are awaiting a check from Obama too.

IRISH KEVINS BIG PAYDAY

I'm furious at BP and Transocean for what happened in the Gulf. But this sure sounds like a shakedown. For most of us, business went on virtually interrupted by that oil spill.

Introduction to Entitlements...

This is how it is done -- One Percenter style.

Completely wrong

Talk about getting it completely wrong...it's someone looking for a handout instead of working for it. That a 180 from the one-percenter. The sense of entitlement is what we one-percenters grip about. Have a clue.

It's called Gaming the System

Which "One-percenters" (which I doubt you actually are)are expert at doing. Your pal Mitt has done it for years and profited massively. Talk about ill-gotten gains and a total sense of entitlement. Are the bar owners ethically and/or morally challenged? Sure. Did they break any laws? Probably not. There's your REAL 1%-er mentality. Play the system to your personal benefit. Welcome to the good ol' US of A.

Obviously you are not a member.

The One-Percent is an economic class, not just a bunch of Tea-Baggers pretending to be wealthy. Bernie Madoff is a One-Percenter. He is unusual only because he went to prison. The tycoons who brought about the collapse of Wall Street are One-Percenters. They are much more typical, because they didn't go to jail.

One-Percenters game the system to take someone else's money. The Irish Kevin ploy is a perfect example. If you were really a One-Percenter, you would realize that it is all about privilege and entitlement, not political ideology.

as if they

don't have enough money already.....and isn't it a bit late to be asking for money from BP? Maybe the owners should not have opened that new La Trattoria on Bayside . 600,000 is an unbelievable amount to ask for .
