Lines being drawn on cruise issue
Channel widening: To do the study or not do the study -- that is the question

As the date for a special City Commission meeting about a proposed widening of the Key West ship channel draws near, partisans on both sides of the issue are preparing to make themselves heard.

An organization of fishing guides -- now formally opposed to commissioning a study that would determine if the project could be done, and if so, at what cost financially as well as en...

T-Shirts

Cates will fight to the death for more t-shirt shops. Owned by non-Americans.

Morally Corrupt Commission

Our mayor and city commissioners-- for the most part-- are totally ignoring the clearly defined wishes of their constituents in favor of moneyed interests.

It's always the case. In this one it's the myopic Chamber of Commerce, which has single-handedly destroyed the character of Duval Street by allowing it to be lined with sleazy strip clubs and crooked t-shirt shops. At another time of the year it's the Sunrise Rotary Club (of which most commissioners are members) and its Poker Run, replete with monstrously loud and clearly illegal mufflers destroying the peace and quiet of our small island. Market Share and its Fat Fest also can do as they wish-- including totally naked, old fat people lining our streets and family neighborhoods for a week every year.

When is there going to ever be a city commissioner who says "Enough!"? Tony "Fat" Yaniz is one of the first I've see-- and I hope he sticks to his guns on this widening issue.

Panico and her Chamber, at the behest of Mark Rossi and his cruise ship industry, have lied up one side and down the other about the impact of declining cruise ship arrivals and fees. Anything we might have lost has more than been made up by the tremendous increase in airport revenues, as recently outlined by Peter Horton in a recent Citizen story.

Commissioners, one more time, the citizens of Key West-- exclusive of Chamber members, duh mayor and bar & t-shirt shop owners-- do not want or need this "study." It would only lead to eventual dredging and the destruction of our National Marine Sanctuary waters and the quality of life of all Key West citizens. Please vote for the people this time-- Vote a resounding NO!

Study

There is no study! The widening of the channel will be done. Period.

It is local taxpayer money!

What part of 'We as taxpayers WILL have to pay' for this do our elected officials not get??? Whether funds come from a state or federal pot of money, they all originate from our own pockets. Please refocus upon something that supports a balance between our economic needs and our quality of life. If you lack the ability as mayor and/or commissioners to do so, perhaps you need to apply to the Chamber for employment instead of the citizens of Key West. Millions of dollars to 'see what happens' does not sound fiscally responsible to me nor does it represent the type of stewardship our community deserves during tough economic times. THAT is your reason to vote no, Mr. Mayor.

Put it to a Citizen vote...

The only ones kicking and screaming are those few who make their living from the cheap cruise ship crowd. Get this... THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! We don't want this. Give us OUR vote!(Yes you, Rossi)

Inevitable

Unfortunately, I think the writing is on the wall here. It's not a matter of if; it's a matter of when it will happen. Key West will always be a popular cruise destination because it is sparkling clean and safe compared to the other places the cruise ships visit. Big money will always win out, and you know darn well the city will cave to the pressure of the 3 giant cruise corporations; Carnival Corp, RCCL, and NCL. No way they will just sit back while KW ignores channel widening to allow newer, larger ships. On the other note, you are correct about cheap cruisers. However, that is due largely to the fact so many Carnival ships dock here, aka Trailer Park of the Seas. Perhaps KW should try to attract the corporations' smaller, more expensive subsidiaries, like Celebrity, Holland America, or Seabourne. It would bring a whole different class of people to the city.

Excuse me

but I'm not part of your "we" and not part of the people who have spoken. I don't make a living from cruise ships and don't hang out on Duval so I don't give a rip how many cruise ships come to Key West. I'm also not an ignorant bigot that would call people that choose to vacation on a cruise ship a cheap crowd. Then there is the fact that Mark Rossi is not the only business owner on the island who might benefit. Perhaps it's time to put some of the blame on that moron Jimmy Buffett for making KW so popular. Oh and Hemingway, Tennesee Williams et al. Now, I HAVE SPOKEN!

How do you make a living

How do you make a living that has no relationship to tourism. Pretty much every job here has roots in tourist dollars. Unless you work for the military or are one of those people on welfare and food stamps spending other people's tax dollars, tourism is likely the reason you have money to pay your rent.

Sorry Bad Dog Mark

I didn't realize you read this. Sorry for calling your $5 t-shirt- buying, 1 drink swilling, free buffet eating (back on the ship)customers cheap. I never knew that was what a bigot did. I really could care less about who you blame or where you hang out. The fact is that a 'majority' of residents are opposed to this widening. You bowing up like a tough guy on the web won't change that little fact.

The Sky is NOT Falling...

To read the Chamber's letter in today's Citizen, you would think that a reduction in cruise ship disembarkations spells the end of Key West.

But even if their wildest dream came true (i.e. the study was approved and the $35 million required for dredging was found at no cost to local taxpayers), it would still be 10 - 15 years before the project was complete.

If that's the best the Chamber can do, get ready for some prolonged belt tightening. Better management calls for replacing that lost revenue to the economy. Fortunately, according to the Chamber's figures on bed taxes, we already have. Last year was Key West's most successful lodging year ever and we are currently on pace to beat last year by ten percent.

The Chamber looks to the highest cruise ship disembarkations ever, 1.1 million as a golden moment in Key West history. But that level was a fiasco for which we damaged our reputation and are still trying to live down the "Getting Ugly" label that it earned us,

Part of Key West's allure has always been that it is not the easiest place to get to, a little effort and investment is required. As cruise ship passenger counts have declined, Key West's bed tax revenue has more than doubled. Do you honestly believe that our land-based visitors are disappointed when there are not cruise ships in port? Even Disney World is better when it isn't overcrowded.

The overwhelming majority of our economy has voted with their wallets. Let's not disregard the results of the election.

Get ready for a Fury Booth on every corner next to a $5 store

Sounds like the votes are in, the payoffs complete, the will of The Royal a families will be done. They have The Mayor, Lopez, even Fats is suddenly interested in the presentation. It is really too bad. The TDC campaigns have worked and we finally have a long term, viable industry coming about with high year round occupancy. Many hotels are already sold out on October Weekends other then Fantasy Fest. The Cruise propaganda has done a great job making this about a study or the environment, , rather then the question of if we needs more ships ( or any ships) given the success of our industry. This one is done folks, unless 100s of Citizens pack the meetings. Even this may not work since HTA, Fury and others will be turning out their people in force. I guess athe Government can spend millions and "build it" for these businesses. Too bad, but pretty predictable.

The Channel is a.....

prime fishing spot?

I have fished the harbor for 30 years

Half of it is dead now , a desert of silt and mud on the east side from Demolition key out to the dog leg south of Key West, and up to the bridge at Fleming. Not to mention the sand from Ft Zachery Taylor washed into the channel. This project is enviromentally destructive and the Cruise ships have already done an immense amount of damage. No study needed.
