Bike shop focused on building business

KEY LARGO -- Steve Troeger quit working construction in August to open a bicycle shop.

Putting his 15 years of bicycle repair experience to work, he says he's finally doing what he loves.

"My passion is to work on bikes," he said. "I just wanted to wake up and enjoy doing something."

Troeger opened All Keys Cycles, at Mile Marker 103.4 in the Pink Plaza, and will focus on renting and repairing bicycles. From his location, Troeger said customers can take the Overseas Highway wherever they want to go.

Plans are also being put in motion to start a cycling club that's based out of his business.

Troeger's love for the two-wheeler began when he raced amateur BMX bikes in his youth. But he says his repair experience runs the gamut.

"I can do anything from a high-end road bike to a run-of-the-mill beach cruiser," he said.

All Keys Cycles also carries name brands like KHS, Phat Cycles and Raleigh.

With his doors just opening, Troeger is already beginning to attract customers for repair work. But it's when the snowbirds arrive that he expects his business to flourish.

"This is the time of year when people clean out their garage and realize they need their bike tuned up," he said.

Like any outdoor activity, Troeger has to deal with mother nature when figuring his success.

"It's too hot out there right now," he said.

To try to spark some business, Troeger hosted a barbecue Sunday for a grand opening festival.

Besides renting, repairing and selling bikes, Troeger offers a variety of bike accessores including helmets and cellphone holders.

Before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m., he also offers pickup and delivery for rentals and repairs.

"I can guarantee most repairs in less than 24 hours," he said.

Through October, Troeger is offering half-price tuneups for $17.99.
