Zonta welcomes and honors

The Zonta Club of Key West last month honored Amber Shaffer as the August Zontian of the month. Shaffer is the club's service committee coordinator.

Alexa Sellers was the September Zontian of the month, and the club recently welcomed three new members: Heather Derouin, Mona Santiago and Mindy McKenzie.

Hospital honors stand-outs

Lower Keys Medical Center recently announced the August "Getting 2 Great" associate awards. The three individuals are recognized by patients, exceed expectations and exemplify the "Getting 2 Great" principles of servant leadership, never settling and always doing the right thing, according to a hospital press release.

Cher Gegorek, who works in wound care, has been a nurse at Lower Keys Medical Center since 1986. She has co-managed the Intensive Care Unit, served as dialysis coordinator, worked as an ICU nurse and organized the hospital's wound care program. She also enjoys mentoring and teaching nurses of all experience levels and has compassion for all she serves, the release states.

Tess Tucker, a nurse in resource management, is the recipient of countless comments and compliments from her co-workers, managers and patients, according to the hospital's press release. They acknowledge her clinical confidence and competence, stellar communication, compassion, teamwork attitude, sensitivity and sense of humor.

Mary Garry is the hospital's day shift phone operator and is the voice of the hospital. She answers every phone call, pages every doctor, makes announcements, and most importantly guides and directs patients, the release states.

As a first impression for the hospital, Garry puts patients, visitors and associates at ease to look inside the operator window and see her smiling face, the release states.
