Fishermen face dozens of charges

Two Lower Keys commercial fishermen accused of a litany of lobster-related violations have been arrested in unrelated cases after months-long investigations that industry officials said highlights a renewed effort by law enforcement to curb crawfish crimes.

In the first case, Peter Ortiz, 34, of Stock Island, was charged Thursday with using trap tags for lobster traps that...

Squealing Shorts!!!

I was not aware that short lobsters were used to bait traps until I read this article.I'm obviously not a fisherperson.I thought lobsters liked to eat steak. So if I do my fancy ciphering, according to the above a fisher may have as many as 1000 traps set out.I do not know how many fisherpeople work this gig...so let's say 10.ARE you telling me that it is possible that 10,000 SQUEALING shorts may possibly be used? To me that is VERY MANY.I have always enjoyed eating those creatures too..But now that I know a baby lobster is left in a trap to SQUEAL for help.OMG there goes yet another food item off my plate. And yet there is more...hypothetically 10,000 shorts down the shoot. It does not take a genius like myself to understand why Lobster Season counts get lower and lower.

"Talking" might be a better word than squeal

Lobsters are social animals and will group together , 2 or 3 "shorts" will attract other lobsters inside. A convienent "home" . It gives shelter, food , and protection from predators. All traps must have a certificate and tag attached, with an "escape slot" opposite the "hauling" side of the trap so that smaller lobsters are swept out of the trap, back to the bottom on retrival. A "trap" is a habitat technically and a lobster can exit the throat will little difficulty . The short lobsters are kept in "live wells " shaded, on the boat to replace in traps that the shorts are gone. They are released at the end of the day. This year has been an exceptionally poor season and even short lobsters are hard to harvest; the trapper was probably holding them over to the next "pull" . His offense is really not having enough tags for his traps, which means he didn't pay his fees to the FWCC. Trap certs were going for $100 a piece last year, you can purchase or sell them just like stock from another trapper. Certifcate prices fluctuate just like stocks. last year the Chinese bought huge amount of live lobsters at inflated prices. This year they didn't buy any. This year the price is a 1/3 of last year. So don't stop eating lobsters , the shorts are released to grow up .
