State backs Navy in tax dispute

The Florida Department of Revenue has sided with Southeast Housing LLC in the development company's lawsuit against the Monroe County Property Appraiser's Office.

The Property Appraiser's Office ruled in June that Southeast Housing -- a partnership of the Navy and the Balfour Beatty Corp. -- must pay property taxes on its buildings on military property in Key West. The prope...

Federal Property...

Its US GOVT/US Navy property and NAS KW is one of numerous bases across the country that has privatized military housing to save taxpayer dollars in maintenance and upkeep. The State properly ruled that it has no taxing authority aboard a Naval Station. Do your homework and realize everything isn't corruption, its a proper separation of Federal and State taxation and land authorities.

Federal Property - No More

What is at issue here is not whether the Federal Govt should pay tax. Clearly it should not. It would cost them to cut the check and Monroe County would receive in taxes. But alas, we are talking about a private for profit company. So if I can follow your logic here, if the federal govt closes their courthouse house in Key West and leases it to someone to use as a shopping mall for anyone to use, that is except the military, - it should be exempt from taxation? I want what you are smoking....

Ridiculous.

The Navy no longer has any personnel housed at Peary Court. The property has been privatized and any homes built there should be taxed.

Of course I'm not surprised that the State would go along with the Navy, given the jerkwad we have in the guv's seat now.

Let's look also at the transferal of this property. It is my belief that any property excessed by the Navy must, by law, first be offered for sale to the City of Key West. This was not done.

I hope this is taken to court. The Navy will have to eat its cap.

crapola

What a bunch of crap. This is a for profit company making money and the FL dept of revenue says they don't owe KW anything. It is one thing if military personnel are located there but when it is for the general population at market rates, it is just wrong that everyone else pays but them...Can't imagine how much pocket money was exchanged
