Three charter amendments on city ballot

In addition to choosing a president, members of congress and other tasks on Nov. 6, voters in Key West will also decide whether to change some of the rules under which the city operates. There are three proposed amendments to the city charter.

One specifies certain duties for the city's mayor, and has drawn little controversy. Another would allow a supermajority of the seven...

Don't be fooled by Florida's

Don't be fooled by Florida's Amendment 8: Religious Freedom, sound catchy doesn't it; Amendment 8, the so-called Religious Freedom revision to the State Constitution, is a glaring example of a deceptively named amendment that actually will do nothing close to what its alluring title promises. This amendment is not about religious freedom at all, but about allowing state government to give public funds to any private religious organization it chooses. To be honest it is another way for government to control what should stay separate; For more than 125 years, the Florida Constitution has included language, known as the "no aid" clause, which guarantees the separation of church and state. It prohibits state government from giving tax money to religious groups for religious programs. I understand in layman's terms of the amendments www.thefloridavoter.org Amendment 1 through 12 vote no. I can't believe how sneaky the wording is and twisted to the point of not representing what the title exclaims. Read the amendments at www.thefloridavoter.org. THNX. Americans are smarter than what the government thinks.., We do our research on issues to further educate. Look Government, we are not dumb, we may be slow but we are getting wise to you and your antics.

VOTE NO ON ALL THREE.

One simple thing to remember here-- Vote No on all three City referenda.

No, we don't trust our city commissioners to annex any land without your approval and your vote-- the vote of the people.

No, we don't want to add to the mayor's powers, no matter how innocent the change might appear. This item would not be on the ballot were it not going to give duh mayor some additional power that's not fully outlined in the initiative wording. Again, we don't trust them.

No, we don't need to change our election dates. This will increase the chances of a massive and confusing ballot just as the one we have this year. Given such complicated ballots, the tendency of the electorate is to not vote on the referenda at all, which is as good for the politicians as a "yes" vote.

Finally, the most important "no": Despite the masquerade of a "charter review committee," these initiatives were fronted by Chamber of Commerce maven Virginia Panico, duh mayor and Rossi-- our city's own "Gang of Three." There's nothing for the people in these referenda; it's all for the benefit of those three and their pals.

Please just remember: VOTE NO

NO! NO! NO!

A thousand times NO! NO! NO!

Ballot Amendments and Referendums

NO ……. on the retention of all supreme and appellate judges

Most of these amendments are creating special TAX EXEMPT groups. ANY shortfall in revenue, WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL TAXPAYERS.

1. YES….Health Care Services: This legislation is simply the people engaging in the right of the people to nullify unconstitutional federal law (symbolic message)

2. NO or YES (you decide)…Veterans Disabled Due to Combat Injury, Homestead Property Tax Discount: Would give the existing homestead tax exemption to disabled veterans who were not Florida residents at the time of entering military service.

3. NO….State Government Revenue Limitation: Would revise the current formula regarding government revenue (taxes, licenses, fees, fines, or charges for services). Other states have attempted this formula through legislation and have had to revise their legislation multiple times in attempts to get the formula right.

4. NO…Property Tax Limitations: Would reduce local government revenue by cutting in half the taxable rate on non-homestead property, such as commercial income properties and second homes. Gives an additional exemption to 1st time home buyers. This amendment is the state government telling the local governments how to assess their taxes.

5. NO…State Courts: Require the Florida Senate to vote to confirm or reject a gubernatorial appointment to the state Supreme Court.

6. NO….Prohibition on Public Funding of Abortions; Construction of Abortion rights: Federal law prohibits the expenditure of federal funds for most abortions (exceptions include rape, incest and threats to a mother’s life)This amendment re-enforces existing governmental restrictions.

8. NO….Religious Freedom: Not about religious freedom it is about religious funding and would invite further government control on the church. That means taxpayers will fund ALL religious institutions

9. NO….Homestead Property Tax Exemption for Surviving Spouse Of Military Veteran or First Responder: Would grant full homestead property tax relief to the surviving spouses of first responders who die in the line of duty.

10. NO…Tangible Personal Property Tax Exemption: Would double the tax exemption on tangible personal property, now controlled by local govt.

11. NO…. Additional Homestead Exemption; Low-Income Seniors Who Maintain Long-Term Residency on Property; Equal to Assessed value: Would authorize cities and counties to grant a full homestead exemption to certain low-income seniors.

12. NO…..Appointment of Student Body President To board Of Governors Of the State University System: Amendment would create a constitutional requirement that would force the establishment of a bureaucracy.

13. NO… Extension of extra Monroe County sales tax through 2033 ….. paaaleeze where does it go now?

14. NO…. FL Keys Aqueduct Authority changed from gubernatorial appointment to elected positions … another bubba nightmare

15. NO….. Changing Key West city commission election and run-off schedule

16. NO….. amend Key West city charter quorum voting requirements

17. NO …..expand the authority of the Key West mayor … the less he does the better

The school board election doesn’t offer a lot of choice

Seventeen Referendums - That's Crazy.

I agree! When in doubt vote NO. How many voters have read much less understand all these referendums, very few I'm sure. But most important they are idiots to do this to the voters, it's the old political strategy load up and we should get a few. Let's send these idiot Commissioners packing with a big NO VOTE on election day. Show them we are not as foolish as they think.

Amendments 1-12 are for the Florida State Constitution and

have nothing to do with your local Commissioners. Monroe County has additional 5 referendums that affect us locally. So the voters in Monroe County will have a total of 17 referendums to decide. I encourage everyone to study up and VOTE EARLY! There is no way that our poling numbers are going to be in time this November with all these amendments. FYI, if you are in line to vote before 7 pm they cannot turn you away. All voters in that line have a right to cast their ballots for as long as it takes. It's going to be a very long night!
