Truman Waterfront plan in home stretch -- again

After 15 years of discussion and debate, the Key West City Commission will consider approval of a master plan for waterfront land given as a gift by the Navy, which will include a marina, a park and other amenities.

Meeting as the Naval Properties Local Redevelopment Authority, commissioners will consider a simply-worded resolution for acceptance. The plan has already been a...

Greed and corruption

by special interests will dominate the process in typical Key West style. The Navy should take it back for home porting a ship or two, or be very involved in the decision making going forward. Just like Truman Annex, some of this property will get fences and bushes to restrict access, or maybe a guard house to scare away those who don't know any better. To bad the state didn't get the whole thing to expand Ft. Zack State Park and cut the cronies out altogether.

How about providing a nice,

How about providing a nice, big, fenced in, dedicated "bum zone" in the plan, with bike racks, a toilet and it's own covered benches and tables to layabout on? It would be kind of a daytime KOTS. This seems only fair since we already have given the kids and the dog people and the bocce people their own special places that the rest of us stay out of.

Lets NOT spend money on the Truman Waterfront.

Why spend one cent here? The Navy will take it back in a heartbeat if they feel they need to. National security outweighs an amphitheater or a recreation center. Lets get serious. This is why it is the Navy who make stipulations as to what can go where and what can't. Lets not be doing the ostrich routine and face the facts. The local economy would do far better if we concentrate on getting some Naval ships based at the southernmost point in the United States. More work for civilians, plus more naval personnel supporting the local economy. Doesn't that make sense?

$$$ Win Again.

Spottswoods, Ed Swift and Virginia Panico and her (puppet) Mark Rossi win again at the expense of us residents. When will it stop? Recall, Commissioner Mark Rossi, that will start it.

Us?

Sorry don't count me in your "us", They've all done more for this town then you ever have.

If you weren't so large...

you'd be transparent, Mark.

Oh brother

First I'm accused of working for Swift, now I'm Mark? Ahahaha Let's see Mac, let's make you Jimmy Buffett!! :p

rename the waterfront

a few acres was given (whored out) to spottswood, why not just sell out the rest. this city is classic on screwing the residents.

Irony

Residents and regular tourists have trouble parking in old town, but a ONE WEEK event that gets a handful of spectators to watch a bunch of fat rich over sponsored white guys buzz on their boats they are barely qualified to kill themselves in ..... I suppose this is what keeps the strip clubs in business.

If The Boat Races Left Forever

Not a single bar or restaurant depends on the boat races to keep them in business. Elvis, you sound like a Fox Business News analyst: all hot air, no thinking.

Dang

Back in the good old days of cocktailing at the Casa Marina I used to make a freaking fortune in tips from the owners and crews. Perhaps they're still spending but not at the sleezier bars.

It appears

you only read the last sentence and my hot air elevated the sarcasm over your bleeding liberal head.

Hence forward, I will simplify the future writings to the level that the blond woman on Fox News deliver their messages.

They paved paradise and put in a parking lot

They paved paradise and put in a parking lot new Submitted on Mon, 10/15/2012 - 2:06pm by WeCanDoBetterKW Citizens wanted a green park - what they were offered instead was a mega-yacht marina and a staging area for cruise ships, Duck Tours, and for the gas guzzling, eco-unfriendly boat races. It should be no surprise, as Mayor Cates is a strong supporter, as well as Mark Rossi who is the VP of the racing association sponsoring these races (is he allowed to vote to allow the races?). Barry Gibson as well as William Spottswood - all on the board of this association. The hell with the citizens and their park. Pave the whole thing so the boats and racers will have the 'hard surfaces' as stipulated - they are not allowed to ruin our "park" grass. Did you citizens really think you were ever going to get a real park? A beautiful park like other cities are able to create? Instead of green grass you get asphalt, parking spaces, and roads. Get real - Key West is all about the mighty tourist dollar, what you want does NOT matter. And do we really need the power boats any longer? - our hotel occupancy numbers are through the roof. All these boats contribute is a lot noise, carbon emissions, and probably a lot of injured or dead sea-life. One day there will be an incident and lawsuit that will make duck tours look like nothing. Way to go Key West.

Besides a marina; a

Besides a marina; a beautiful garden park to enjoy during work break or lunch break or after a hard days work, amphitheater, spray park (spray ground), roller hockey area, his and hers restrooms with lock gate. Have the park well lit. Maybe have a black fence around the perimeter so it can be locked after 11pm so bums and undesirables wont wonder in, take over and destroy the place.

We almost have a plan.

After 15 years, the commission almost has a plan. The most revealing point is that Rossi's main concern is that the boat races are accommodated in the manner in which they are accustomed. As usual, the citizens have been accommodated in the manner in which we are accustomed.

Rossi's biggest concern

What could it be? His constituents? A park for the people who live here? No, as usual Rossi is for an event that brings people to his bars and strip club. The area where the park at Truman Waterfront used to be is now "a staging area for powerboat races". I guess you can forget trees, bike and walking paths and access to the water for the lowly Citizens of our island. Just more tack for the huge cruise ships Mark is committed to.

Are you sure

you're not Mac? Your negativity is unreal! And yes, I'll say it again .... if you hate it here so much then leave!

BTW, last I knew there Rossi didn't own every bar in town so why not give THAT a rest!

Black dog, do everyone a

Black dog, do everyone a favor and shut up unless you have something to add. Now there's an idea everyone can get behind!

Tired Retread

Your tired battle cry of "like it or leave it" is the only thing that is unreal. Is your argument really that everyone should sit idly by and watch the robber barons rape the city and its resources for personal gain? Do you really beleive that the majority of the elected officials' constituents are more concerned about parking spaces for powerboats than green space and community based sports fields, walking trails, chess tables and theaters? Your Historic Tour stripes are showing again.

666 and

your second posting non-ID are reeking of jealousy. What have you ever done for KW besides sit at your computer and whine. Why do you stay in a town you despise?

Wrong.......again

Au contraire, mon frère.

I stay here so I can upset

I stay here so I can upset the inbred locals like you. Ya know what I mean cuzzy?

I'm never

upset over this tripe. Inbred locals .... nice. That just shows what kind of trash you transplant snowbirds are. You move in, trash our island and insult us. Real nice. Take a long look in the mirror "cuzzy". :p

When you have a small island

When you have a small island population, who marry one another, for several generations, it is called inbreeding. If the shoe fits... LOL. BTW, if we trash your island, why do take all our money? Without snowbirds Wesley House would close its doors and your kids would not have toys or daycare. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

You are so

off the mark that one would question your sanity. Seems to me you're the one biting the hand that feeds you!

I have NO idea why you're so hateful. I know little about the Wesley House since my children are grown. I do hope they don't allow you around small children or any children for that matter.
