Toddler drowns in Sugarloaf canal

Monroe County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy who reportedly drowned in a canal near a Sugarloaf Key home Monday evening.

Jadiyean Butler was pulled from the canal on Green Turtle Lane at 5:30 p.m., but could not be revived by responding paramedics or the child's mother, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.

The boy was last seen eating pistachios on the porch while his mother, Carletta Butler, 29, of Key West, was inside the home feeding her second child, a newborn baby, the release states.

She went to check on Jadiyean and he was no longer on the porch. Another adult, Adrian Poitier, 42, of Key West, helped her find the child in a canal, the release states. Both pulled him from the canal and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

"At this point in time it appears what happened is a tragic accident, however detectives are looking into the incident," said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin.

Thoughts and Prayers of Jadiyean Butler

I was cruising through Facebook when I saw that my friend had passed away. I am very sad to hear the news of Jadiyeans passing. Jadiyean was a very good boy who had yet to experience life as we know it, however I can say that he was a bundle of joy who made fun of every aspect of life. Jadiyean brought smiles to everyone around him. I had the pleasure of helping him learn to talk. Although our time together was brief he made a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. J will truly be missed.

Station 10

Drowning is a continued lack of oxygen in the brain, hypoxia, will quickly render a victim unconscious usually around a blood partial pressure of oxygen of 25-30mmHg. An unconscious victim rescued with an airway still sealed from laryngospasm stands a good chance of a full recovery. Artificial respiration is also much more effective without water in the lungs. At this point the victim stands a good chance of recovery if attended to within minutes. Station 10 in Sugarloaf was manned 5 days a week from 8-6, MCFR Fire Chief wanted to staff that station full time 24/7 but the comminishers said no at the last budget meeting, one of the Comminishers said we already have a fire station 4 minutes away. Perhaps it's time to rethink this. Had the Sugarloaf station been manned 24/7 perhaps the EMS crew would have been there a lot quicker. Of the Sugarloaf volunteers that responded to that call, how many of them are trained to intubate a child? Paramedics are. Food for thought.

Does it matter?

Does it truly matter what the criminal background is of the parent(s)? I happened to be in the emergency room that evening with a family member and I heard that poor woman's sobs as she cried over the body of her child. I am a man, and it brought tears to my eyes and I don't even know them. Even the detectives & emergency room staff and other patients were visibly upset. The fact remains that an innocent child lost his life due to a tragic turn of events. It is a parent's worse nightmare. Let's get a little perspective here folks.

So sad

Bless his little heart; this is tragic.

Tragic loss of innocent life

Now is not the time to speculate or blame. Now is the time to mourn the loss of an innocent boy who was incapable of harm to anyone.

I Guess...

The Rabbi looked at their rap-sheets too. Jaded indeed, He didn't have a chance. so sad.
