Still no power to No Name
Despite community support, commission takes firm stance

The Monroe County Planning Commission upheld the denial of a building permit to a No Name Key homeowner who wants to connect his home to a series of power lines that were recently erected there.

The decision came after hours of discussion and debate from experts, residents and environmental group leaders about the comprehensive plan, county land-use rules and what exactly co...

Let's All Calm Down...The End is Near

As one long time observer said, the vote is'rigged'. Of course it is. Every key issue the Planning or Board of County Commissioners considers is decided before their meetings. We all KNOW that. Say a prayer. Sing a song. It matters not what you say to them in public the day they meet as they have decided what to do long before hand. County Commissioner Murphy sat next to Alicia Putney, nearly holding hands with each other all day, in the second row for all to see. Anyone want to guess that the Planning Commissioner Murphy appointed was told how to vote just as the building official, Smith I think is his name, was openly coached by Murphy prior to his speaking in public. You don't think those were bible verses she was sharing in his ear for only they to hear. No, instructions is more like it. The good news is that the decission will now be appealed and a court will hear the evidence including Ms. Hurley, who looks and sounds and acts a lot like soon to be former County Commissioner Piggington, err Wiggington, said over and over that the various clauses and laws on their own did not apply to a simple electrical permit. That man and all there who want power will surely win on appeal and the deception that the County subjected his family, all of their families to, in the name of a very few zealots, will get that much closer to ending. The Appeals Court will also support the local judge who earlier this year said the issue of power is for the Public Service Commission to decide and that entity, the Public Service Commission, has made it clear that the law is fully on their side and that they will not (and never, ever) lose. A few months from now the dust will settle and those who want power, and a permit, will celebrate. Until then, dear reader, have no doubt that the local political process is sadly 'rigged' and that the deck is stacked against the common person when he or she is up against long time relationships like those that Murphy and Putney specialize in. Masked under the nobel idea of protecting nature they broker in lies, deceit and pesonal agendas. And that my friends is indisputable but they will soon be proven wrong. Those who want justice on and for that island will not stop until two decades of discriminaton come to an end. No matter how long it takes, or how much it costs, you can be sure that the good people on No Name will win in the end and then dear friends Murphy and Putney can go hold hands in the heat of summer without power or whatever else they enjoy with one another as is their right, perhaps having their newly recruited Puppet, Smith, serve them tea.

The definition of ugly

I gasped in horror when I came to the crest of the No Name Key bridge and saw the seemingly endless row of square concrete power poles on No Name Key. If the goal was to make the island appear as ugly as possible, success was achieved. One has to wonder if the 13-lot development (bare lots listed for $200,000 each in http://www.flkeysliving.com/realestate/waterfront/properties/big-pine-ke...) had a role in this whole saga. Take a ride and look at what they've done to No Name Key. It didn't have to happen the way it did. That Mr. Craig was called as a witness speaks volumes.

It's a beautiful thing

What? Did you like the desolate landscape with no poles on it? You clearly are not a resident of No Name Key. The VAST MAJORITY of the residents of No Name Key each paid $30,000 to put those poles up so we could live like civilized folk and not have to burn fossil fuels (remember you stupid greenie--we hate fossil fuels). We think the poles are beautiful, and now that they are LEGALLY in place (remember, you stupid greenie, the Judge refused to stop KEYS Energy when the county asked), it it OUTRAGEOUS for the county to say we can't connect. By the way, how did you feel about the "green" quarry?

Really

You gasped in horror when you came to the crest of the No Name bridge and saw the poles? That is a pretty dramatic comment from someone who obviously doesn't live on No Name. We're you coming on to the island from your house that has electricity? Do you gasp in horror as you enter Key Largo and see all the power poles lining the streets all the way to Key West? Really....

"Electricity would degrade the community character"--What BS

Christine Hurley has no freaking idea what she is talking about! What "degrades" our island is noisy, smelly, expensive generators that have a carbon footprint six times the size of grid power. What degrades our island is people too freaking stupid to know that solar energy is only "green" when it is connected to the grid, so that power generated after the battery bank is full does not go to waste. The Planning Commission has no business telling me that I cannot hook up to an energized power line 50 feet from my house that I paid over $30,000 to install. That's not their job. I hope the court hits Monroe County hard for the idiocy it has perpetrated. No county government ever has denied people permission to connect to a power line that is already installed. This is beyond outrageous!

I wonder if Don Craig was on

I wonder if Don Craig was on the clock during these meetings or if he took a vacation day? I hope it was not during business hours since this has nothing to do with Key West Taxpayers who fund his paycheck. Maybe he should throw some rocks at the county commissioners to get his point across.

Duck Tours

This is the county's version of Key West's Duck Tours fiasco. County taxpayers keep paying year after year to fight a battle that will be lost. All because some people have convinced voters that if No Name Key gets power the next step is 20 story hotels up and down the Keys.

I ree with Fairvalues on this one.

The County has been entering into lawsuits that cost us the tax payers plenty, one other example is the mauling of the Marathon based Stand up for Animals (SUFA). Time to stop all these lawsuits and let it go, the people of No Name roast in their homes and have to resort to generators so let them have power as the wires are much less pollutant than small generators roaring through the day and night and let SUFA go or we will have to let the Commissioners go!

I officially withdraw my

I officially withdraw my request, I just found out who they are.

I would like to see listed

I would like to see listed by name the current active members of the Monroe County Planning commission. Could someone put that in here?

Craig Throwing Stones Again...

All the more reason why you should never take a Pro-Development-Hack, like Don Craig, and give him an official title with which to support his Anti-Public-Interest views.
