Head Start kids poorer in 2011
More since 2008 come from families living below the federal poverty line

The Florida Keys had more children in its Head Start program living below the federal poverty line and on public assistance than three years ago, according to the School District's 2011-12 report.

Of the 197 children enrolled in Head Start at five locations in the Keys last school year, 179 were from families below the poverty line.

Cost of living.

I am a County Firefighter/Paramedic and my child that turns 3 next week will be starting on this program. So does that mean the County pays me at the poverty level? I have not received a raise in 2 years and will not for another 2 years due to our Union contract. I actually received a 3 % decrease when Scott took office. I an thankful the services are aviable.

Head Start kids poorer in 2011

This is not a good article as it mixes apples and oranges. The kids are not poor - the parents are - and for many, many reasons. If Monroe County plans to spend one million seven hundred thousand dollars ($1,700,000.00) on 180 children between the ages of birth to 5 years of age that is almost $10,000.00 a year per child ($9444.00). The article does not indicate what that funding provides to someone that cannot read or write much less feed themselves. The Office of Head Start has a web page http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ohs/ and it states that "Head Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of children ages birth to 5 from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development". Not being an educator, I can only assume that this funding is for preschool activities like art, not running with sissors, and teaching little Johnny and Jane to play well together. If the $10,000.00 per year (times 5 years) for each child was placed into an interest bearing account until the child has graduated from high school, that would certainly elevate them from poverty or allow them to attend higher education. It can only be used for education. If you do not graduate from high school, you have to return the funds. But, to state that there are more kids on poverty roles this year than in years past, has nothing to do with funding more preschool kids this year than prior years. When mom and dad are unemployed, they get bored and have more kids. More kids equals more money.

so many reasons

Firstly we can blame the hotels that have high occupancy and charge exhorbitant amounts of monies and have the audacity to pay about $10.00 an hour (some a little more- some a little less) to clean 7 to 9 rooms a day, rooms the hotel has made at a usual rounded number 200.00 per night. So, out of 1400.00 to 1800.00 these ladies make 80.00. It's criminal and the executive committees in these hotels should be ashamed. Larger corporations as well. The rates for other workers are similar in LOW paying. This is Key West, the cost of living here is high and the wages paid do not reflect that at all. If they do not get their heads out of their backsides and take care of these people better, there will be no people to clean these rooms, to clear your grounds, to mop your lobbies, to bag your expensive groceries, to run and chase down your shopping carts from all over the Key West streets. Here's another fact...Dr's refusing medicaid patients. Dr'a refusing NUMEROUS forms of health insurances. Funding cut across the board by Rick Scott and his minions cut Florida Kids Care so they made requirements stricter and costs higher, and the familes simply can not afford the costs. As for the unemployed parents, they have seen that with the cuts in child care and health benefits for their kids, it is better for only one parent to work because it is financially more feasible. So look at it---your cuts to the poor and lazy did not inspire them to work harder, it pushed them into having to be poorer to be aided. Brilliantly trickling down isn't it.

The Republicans' are looking

The Republicans' are looking to overhaul several safety net programs, including turning Medicaid and food stamps into block grants in hopes of relieving the federal government's fiscal burden. Mitt Romney is trying to dismantle the welfare-to-work system by allowing recipients to avoid the employment requirement; in other words "keep the system broken, do not fix", and the gap widens further by giving the rich a huge tax break by billions and only tax break of a couple hundred for the middle/low class, cut government services that help working families: Pell grants, Headstart, Medicaid, education, on and on. That’s their plan–on their website. Obama wants every American to afford health care, insurance can't drop you for preexisting conditions, improving education not cutting it, shorten the gap on poverty, big tax breaks on middle & poor Americans, stop the war and wasting dollars. The difference between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. Barack Obama has seen and lived poverty, he knows first hand what it is like to have to make a decision between eating and paying bills. Mitt Romney has always been rich (born with a silver spoon), he has never been in poverty let alone lived it and can't fathom the day to day struggle. Mitt Romney... it must be nice to be rich and have money at your disposal and not worry where the next meal will come from.

Talking Points

Spoken like a true hinge-head

Typical

Typical for a right winger... Name calling, but no substantive rebuttal of the prior valid points. You are yours are bringing the level of discourse to new lows. At least you could have spewed out a few lies, like your standard bearer does every day.

There you go again
