Wind cancels Pretenders in Paradise
Storm brews in Atlantic but misses the Lower Keys

The Florida Keys is safe from Hurricane Sandy's wrath, but the storm sent enough high winds Thursday to cancel the 29th annual costume contest, Pretenders in Paradise, and close Monroe County schools today.

Though disappointing costume-makers and revelers alike, the rare weather-related derailing during the Keys' largest annual party is an isolated case.

Right on

Fantasy Fest has become a horrible spectacle to witness. Thats why no one ever shows up for it. Year ,after year, after year

The whole story

Of course, we don't have the full story here. No one mentioned that they only sold 60 general admission tickets out of 400. Yes folks, this was a bomb! Sadly, our new fantasy visitors don't really care about elaborate costumes, tradition, or charity. All they care about is sleeze, nudity, cheap drinks, and sex. That is what fantasy fest has become. The fetish parties were packed, but this event was a bomb. My guess is you will not see this event ever again at The Pier House. That is the full story. The rain and wind allowed them to save face.

Spot On

Your comments are spot on. What was once a creative showcase of talent has devolved into a sloppy exhibition of classless drunks wandering the streets in $5 costumes and crap they stole from their grannies underwear drawer. Welcome to the world created by your Chamber, TDC and select local business owners.

No Question

The trashy slobs get nastier and less sophisticated every year. They must be the same slobs that arrive on the cruise ships then decide to come back for Fantasy Fest.

Well

I guess we know where you work! LOL

I don't work there but I

I don't work there but I have friends that do. The whole executive team knows that 90 percent of general admission tickets went unsold. Upper end restaurants were empty and shops had very few sales. The only winners were bars, hotels (which have had high occupancy every weekend anyway), and out of town food trucks and body painters. Time for a change folks, we have more to offer then sex clubs and cheap drinks.

So Sad

There is so much thought and work and art put into these costumes every year, it is sad their work will go unseen. Maybe they can have a post party next week?

The only post-party...

The only post-party will be for FatFest itself, which has become a tawdry embarrassment to the city of Key West.

Fantasy Fest has become

Fantasy Fest has become tacky and tasteless; It will only get worse each passing year. Hate working downtown, have to dodge through crowds that wont let you through since they are too drunk.

Tacky and tasteless

is a mild description. I have to admit this was the raunchiest FF ever. I've never seen so many ugly naked people in my life! Yes, Mac, you've been right all along. Sagging boobs and rolls of fat painted up is not what FF is all about, nor is it the least bit attractive. Neither is a painted beer gut or the sight of a 70 year old mans behind ..... let alone his sagging schlong and sacks. What is wrong with these people? I can only hope with all the avid picture takers that pictures of these disgusting individuals show up in their northern home towns. If we disrespected their cities like they do ours, we would be in jail. Also part of the blame goes to the city and bois in blue for letting things get so out of hand. A fun Fantasy Fest is a thing of the past. They need to rename it The Pee, Puke and Potbelly Party. Perhaps that should also be next years theme.
