Jack-o'-lantern likely came from the British Isles, where turnips, mangelwurzel or beets were carved with faces during the Gaelic festival of Samhain when fairies and spirits were said to be active in parts of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands.

Some believe that hollowed-out and carved root crops, gourds and cucurbitaceae represented spirits and otherworld...
