Miniature monsters and Lilliputian ghouls
With Fantasy Fest over, it's the kids' turn

Tiny trick or treaters will be swamping their usual haunts in parts of New Town and Key Haven neighborhoods Wednesday as parents rejoice -- Fantasy Fest doesn't fall on Halloween this year, giving children the night all to themselves.

As such, Key West police and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office are making their annual announcement that they will be out in force warning and citing drivers not only in Key West, but throughout the islands, to slow down and give the kids a chance to trick or treat without having to dodge chrome bumpers.

Typically, the most heavily trafficked neighborhoods in Key West by miniature monsters and Lilliputian ghouls are Key Haven and the streets off Northside Drive and the terraces, but police will be watching drivers everywhere, said Key West police spokeswoman Alyson Crean.

Some midtown areas such as those near Key West High School and homes on the east side of the Staples Avenue bridge also draw trick or treaters, Crean said.

"Everyone, everywhere needs to be reminded to pay attention, not just in those areas where they are used to seeing trick or treaters," Crean said.

The Sheriff's Office also wants people to be mindful of where they park their car if transporting tiny vampires far from their caskets.

"Really, if everyone is just courteous, we won't have any problems," said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin, adding that would-be vandals would do well to remember that deputies and officers will be looking for them as well.

"Vandalism is still vandalism, regardless of what day it is," Herrin said.
