20 YEARS AGO

A referendum was on the Key West ballot proposing the creation of six single-member voting district commissioners and a mayor to be elected at large.

The Coast Guard had rescued 2,205 Cuban refugees thus far that year; the most since the Mariel Boatlift of 1980.

Moe Mosher gave his last haircut to Jim Flenner. Flenner's was also the very first haircut Mosher had given in 1951 when both men were in the Navy in Key West.

50 YEARS AGO

This was the last day for Key West City Manager Bazel Crowe, who had resigned to take a government job in Guam.

Military security remained tight despite the suspension of the Cuban blockade and aerial surveillance.

Concord Department Stores announced a new shopping center adjoining the Food Fair at 2500 North Roosevelt Blvd.
