Adult day care center now ready to open

After six months of securing the required permits, an adult day care center is expected to open next month at Mile Marker 100, bayside.

Tranquility Bay Adult Day Care is set up and ready to go, said co-owner Nicky Garcia.

The center, which has tables for dominoes or checkers, two flat-screen televisions and a library, is decorated with colorful paintings and also offers a kitchen that serves breakfast and lunch.

"We are already getting drop-ins who just want to check out the place," said Garcia, a Miami-Dade County social worker.

The center is geared toward clients ages 55 years and older. As part of licensing requirements, there will one staff member for every six patrons.

Garcia and business partner Oscar Hernandez said senior day care centers like Tranquility Bay are common in Miami.

"There's one at every corner in Miami, but nothing down here," said Garcia, who decided to take advantage of an untapped market.

Garcia studied the area and said 60 percent of Upper Keys seniors expressed an interest in such a program.

Garcia said she also plans on offering exercise options, including dance, for those interested.

For those who do not drive, Tranquility Bay will offer shuttle service to the center. Garcia said she plans on servicing clients from the Upper Keys to Marathon. Pickups begin at 6:30 a.m. and dropoffs start at 2 p.m. The center is open until 6 p.m.

Though the center serves primarily as a place where families can leave their loved ones for the day, Garcia said anyone can enjoy the center.

"It's a place someone can just come in and socialize," she said. "It's a service to the community."

A self-described "half-time local," Garcia says she has frequented the Florida Keys for many years. The tranquil, flip-flop lifestyle of the islands inspired the facility's name, she said.

Tranquility Bay Adult Day Care's grand opening is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 and will include food and drinks, raffles and prizes.
