Some state race results incomplete

Local races for state representative and state senate were still undecided at press time, due to heavy voter turnout in Dade County, part of which is included in both contested districts.

In the District 120 representative race, Republican Holly Raschein appeared to lead Democrat Ian Whitney with 26,504 votes to his 23,953, or 52.53 percent to 47.47 percent.

Raschein bested Whitney in all Monroe County precincts.

Unofficial results showed Raschein with 20,737 in Monroe, or 57 percent. Whitney had 15,630 Monroe County votes, or 43 percent.

Key precincts in Dade County had not been counted by 10 p.m.

"We are on pins and needles," Raschein said Tuesday night from the Harvey Government Center in Key West.

During a telephone interview Tuesday night, Whitney said people were still voting.

"There are lines out the door in some of those precincts," Whitney said. "We are not going to know for a while. These are heavily African-American precincts, which polls show are supporting me."

In the race for Senate District 39, Democrat Dwight Bullard was leading Republican Scott Hopes by a sizeable margin but all numbers were not in.

Bullard had 82,962 votes, or 69.44 percent, to Hopes' 36,511, or 30.56 percent.

Hopes noted that some key south Miami precincts had not yet reported at close to 10 p.m.

"I am waiting to see," Hopes said. "Those precincts aren't in yet so we will see what happens."

In Monroe County, Hopes garnered 18,970 votes or 54 percent. Bullard garnered 16,404 votes, or 46 percent.

Bullard has served as a state legislator, filling out the term of his mother, Larcenia Bullard. But Bullard abandoned the seat to run for the state senate.

Hopes, a state Republican Executive Committee member, was director of health policy for the state Agency for Healthcare Administration under former Gov. Jeb Bush.
