Guzman, Rios, Garcia

Superintendent of Schools Mark Porter has announced that Brock Guzman of Key West High School (right), Jonathan Rios from Marathon High School and Isabella Garcia from Coral Shores High School will represent the Monroe County School System at the Sunshine State Scholars Program in February.

Each year the local high schools nominate a junior who is distinguished in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to be their representative for the District Sunshine State Scholar.

Brock of Key West High currently has a 4.5789 weighted GPA and is interested in developing forms of alternative energy using natural resources such as the ocean. "Beyond my dreams for myself," he said, "I want other kids to share my fervor in the fields of science and math. I'd love for the world to run one day without oil and to be a part of that, but I'd be far more content to inspire others as I have been inspired."

The District's scholars, parents and a teacher who has had a significant influence on each will be invited to Orlando for a two-day program.
