Bight Board hears plans
Maybe, two more restaurants on tap

Pat Croce, the millionaire entrepreneur whose website features him posing with President Barack Obama and 76ers star Alan Iverson, wants to expand his restaurant empire to include two waterfront Key West hot spots.

Croce has struck a deal to take over Turtle Kraals and the Half Shell Raw Bar from local businessman Gene Smith, and is due to appear at today's 9 a.m. meeting of...

City Undervalues its Property

Ten percent would be a much more appropriate rent, considering the location on the water and the development of the bight. In other words, the location is a magnet for traffic, which should translate into a better rate for the landlord. Five percent is rock bottom rent for a bad location.

First time I disagree with you, Rabbi

Our area of the bight really recieves the least amount of traffic, to the south the Conch farm stops most tourists before they come this way. Then Schooner stops the drunks which we can do without, then the lack of visible businesses at the old waterfront mkt has many turning around before they get to our plaza. The rest that do make it are dragging thier bags to the ferry terminal and looking for a rest room. The crowd that goes to Dantes aren't interested in any but drinks in the pool. As said in the last article , business is down at Half Shell and TK's and it was because Management failed to keep Paul Tripps formula alive.

Gene is bailing because of the lack of cooperation

and price gouging by the city. A 5% rate increase in yearly rent , regardless of the economic state , and of course dealing with Wilburger ; whom tenants do not trust. Now the City wants an "assignment fee". They must need it to pay for the $700,000 storage shed they are building next to the bait shop. Which Wilburger lied to the board about, saying there was a tenant who wanted to rent it. The Half shell supports much more than just it immediate employees but a myriad of others, the fish market is a prime example of long term relationships with local fishermen in the community have benifited both. Paul Tripp built on the fact local fresh seafood comes in almost daily and quality does matter , he created a 30 year bond that continues today. We hope that Mr. Croce will continue to support this part of the Key West community.

Go back to Philly

Enough Croce, go back to Philly. We don't need someone who knows nothing about the restaurant business taking over every landmark place in town. You want proof? Go eat at the place he opened behind The Parrot. The remodeling is sterile and more Boca then Key West, but most importantly, the food is horrible! I love BBQ so have gone three times and each was worse than the last. Dried out meats, frozen fries, and sides right out of a Sysco container. What a shame. Half Shell actually had good food and was one of the few places at The Bight that was not a tourist trap. Based on his other ventures, those days will soon be gone.

I've not gone there but I've heard it's awful. I doubt they

have any repeat customers that are locals. Mr. Croce seems to pander to tourists, who wouldn't come back anyway. Plus he loads every property up with 20 monster TV's. I mean, really? I can't eat in that sort of noise and atmosphere. While I'm sure some neanderthals can't eat without a game in front of them and are unable to carry on a conversation, most of us, believe it or not, PREFER to enjoy a quiet, quality mean with conversation.

*.* CLEARLY

I'm a local who HAS been there. Some people try places first before passing judgement, and a lot of us 'neanderthals' go to places just to have a few drinks, eat, and watch a game. If you PREFER a quiet meal with conversation, then go to a place that offers that. I would never go to Marquesa and bitch about them not having a game on. Or better yet, stay home and cook, eat, and converse to your hearts desire. That being said, I'm not a fan of Croce's places either, but I base that on experience, not hearsay! You are SO judgeMENTAL about EVERYTHING, I just had to respond.

Word of Mouth

Word of mouth among locals will bury the bbq place. It's only been open a few weeks and already I've heard countless horror stories from locals who were expecting much more.

The food is not good. No matter your name or how much money you put into such an establishment, it won't overcome word of mouth regarding bad food.

Sorry, friend.

Actually my guess is it will

Actually my guess is it will do fine thanks to our high class tourists. Remember, this is the demographic that thinks Applebee's is fine dining.

how sad

How sad that this is so true

Just What We Need

Another Ed Swift in the making. I noticed that Croce doesn't mention the fact that he had the owner of the plot of land next to the Parrot renege on a lease to Bobablu's because he wanted it to expand his place and offered an obscene amount of money for it.

Please don't mess with the

Please don't mess with the ribs.
