Slave ship story lives on in descendants
Bahamian museum displays artifacts from 1860 wreck

After a 36-day voyage from the Congo in Africa on July 25, 1860, the slave ship Peter Mowell was heading for Cuba.

The 88-foot vessel was carrying a human cargo of 400 captive Africans, including 256 children who would have inevitably ended up slaves had the winds of fate not been blowing in their favor that day.
