The wind lifts up the kiteboarding business

Aaron Osters has relocated his kiteboarding business from Duck Key, where he operated for about three years, to the city of Marathon.

Located on the Overseas Highway across from Burger King, Florida Keys Kiteboarding opened earlier this month. The business offers lessons and gear for all things related to the water.

Osters encourages anyone interested in kiteboarding to start with a beginner's lesson. For $300, students get a three-hour lesson, starting with 30 minutes on the ground to learn terminology and a little about the kite. After that, students head out to the boat docked at the canal behind the shop for a trip to Jack Tar Flat, a sandbar near Key Colony Beach.

Everybody is different, so it takes some people longer to grasp the basic skills of kiteboarding, Osters said.

"I've had students who can do it in two hours and others that needed three beginner lessons," he explained.

Regardless of how long it takes any particular person to learn how to handle the board, he was adamant that anyone new to kiteboarding start with lessons.

"Without a lesson, you're gonna get hurt," Osters said, "But everybody can learn to kiteboard."

Osters' slogan is "If it's blowin', we're goin'." He's passionate about the sport and, provided there's a breeze, he promises to be on the water teaching or riding.

Beyond kiteboarding lessons, Osters offers spectator trips, gear rentals and sales, as well as kayak lessons, rentals and sales.

The shop also offers daily yoga classes. Not your typical experience, students practice stand-up paddleboarding yoga, or SUP yoga, in which yoga is performed on a paddleboard anchored in calm, shallow water.

Florida Keys Kiteboarding also carries spearfishing gear.
