20 YEARS AGO

Key West Mayor Dennis Wardlow cut the ribbon to open the new Walgreens on North Roosevelt Boulevard.

A slow economy forced developer Pritam Singh to abandon plans to build a Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Sunset Key, formerly called Tank Island.

Former Monroe County Mayor Wilhelmina Harvey said as a county commissioner, she would still give out Honorary Conch certificates.

50 YEARS AGO

A three-column publicity spread appeared in the New York Herald Tribune, extolling the charms, beauties and numerous tourist activities in Key West.

Harry S. Pritchard was named to the vacant seat on the County Commission by Gov. Farris Bryant. He was to take office at the regular meeting on Nov. 27.

City Manager Archie Lowe and City Electric System engineers were working on a lighting plan and lighting standards for the city.
